Music for Perfect People

Earlier today, YANP premiered the brand new, unreleased Yellow Ostrich track “‘Til I Disappear.” While the single starts off with a lonely guitar line and the vocals of frontman Alex Schaaf, it slowly increases its pace into an all-out rock jam. After the combination of fuzzy effects and hard hitting drums takes hold of yours ears, all the sound drops out, and Yellow Ostrich finishes off the track with an excellent build-up of layered vocals.

Yesterday, Yellow Ostrich, aka Alex Schaaf and friends, recorded a live set for KEXP. Prior to the performance,  Alex said that “for the majority of you who are not from NYC, this will be your first chance to hear what we sound like live.  Whether or not that is a good thing remains to be seen, but we hope to pleasure your ears with our midday songs.”

The set included the tracks “Daughter,” “Ha Ha Ha Oh Ho Ho,” “Mary,” and “Whale.” If you would like to hear the original tracks as they appear on Yellow Ostrich’s album The Mistress, you can download/stream them over at bandcamp.

Yesterday, Yellow Ostrich released The Mistress EP for free download/listen on bandcamp. I have also included a lovely, unofficial video for the track “Whale” which consists solely of lazy drums and vocal lines .. such a simple but great listen.

In regards to Mistress, Alex of Yellow Ostrich said:

I’ve released many other things while working on this album, but this has been the one I’ve kept coming back to.  It’s easily the longest time I’ve ever spent on one album [...] It’s the first album to feature musicians other than myself.  I got some friends to play drums and guitars and bass here and there.  Most of it is still just me, but there’s some nice touches here and there that I couldn’t have done otherwise.

Looking for a physical release from Yellow Ostrich? Well, you can help! A kickstarter page has been set up in which you can donate money to raise enough cash to put The Misstress on vinyl. The goal is to press 250-300 records so pledging $15 (pretty much pre-ordering) would be an awesome thing to do. Remember, you won’t get charged for your donation unless the goal is reached so if you have some spare cash, help out a good cause! The more money you give, the more cool stuff (like Yellow Ostrich t-shirts and posters) you’ll get!  The most generous fans will get a very exclusive lyric hanging of a song of their choice from the album.

Yellow Ostrich, the brainchild of Wisconsin native Alex Schaaf, has recently put out a digital 7” titled Whalemary. The two tracks, “Whale” + “Mary,” are shining examples of happy, indie bedroom jams that are simple, layered, and beautiful. Don’t believe me? Check out “Whale” below ..
