Music for Perfect People

If you have attended a music festival in the United States over the last year or two, odds are you have experienced Pretty Lights or heard about his music and live show. His unique soulful electronic music has spread like wildfire through the blogosphere and has resulted in a massive U.S. fanbase, which is evidenced by the large number of sold out tour dates.

Today, Pretty Lights has teamed up with the technology behemoth BitTorrent to release a media bundle that contains PL’s Glowing In The Darkest Night EP, Making Up A Changing Mind EP,  Spilling Over Every Side EP, along with a video of his Bonnaroo performance, and a bonus single “I Know The Truth.” Even though Pretty Lights has been giving away his music free of charge for years through his website, the project with BitTorrent will allow him to share his creativity with ”over 100 million music enthusiasts in 165 countries.” [via]

“I began offering my music as a free download with the release of my first album because I’ve always supported the sharing of digital media, including my own creations.” said Smith from his current Australian tour. “I’ve experienced the benefits firsthand of letting anyone and everyone download my music at no charge, which is, primarily, a momentous growth in the attendance of my live shows. I believe that the recipe for my success has been three fold. One, producing fresh and original soulful music. Two, continuing to always invest back in the production of my live show/experience. As a follow-up to this year’s Ventriloquizzing, the electro-pop four-piece Fujiya & Miyagi have released a new single “Ecstatic Dancer.” According to singer/guitarist David Best, “the title came from a drawing by Oskar Kokoschka. Lyrically it takes its cues from fifties songs which described dance moves, like the mash potato etc.” [via] In typical F&M fashion, the interaction between the drums, synth, and guitar drive the single and David Best’s vocals sound more like a conversation than singing.

Below, we have Fujiya & Miyagi’s live rendition of “Ecstatic Dancer,” which sounds much grittier than the studio single as the guitar in the video is overly fuzzy.

With the RX Bandits announcement that this summer’s tour would be there last, many fans are left wondering what the members of the band will do now that their main project is coming to a close. Well, Sargent House has responded by releasing information for a new project titled ME&LP, which is a collaboration between two of the labels’ greats: Matt Embree, and Lisa Papineau. On August 9th, the duo will release Chez Raymond, which is a 6-song EP that will include the single ” La Bella Tocade.”

On July 19th, Portugal. The Man will release their latest effort In The Mountain, In The Cloud, through Atlantic Records. In the past we have brought you previews of a handful of tracks, but now we have a full stream of the track “Got It All (This Can’t Be Living Now).” I am loving additional vocals on this track!

Previously, we brought you “Knuckle Down,” the first single to be heard from Man Man‘s forthcoming Life Fantastic, which featured the dark, layered, and multi-instrumental sound that Man Man has become known for. On the title track “Life Fantastic,” however, Man Man seems to tone down their energy and focus more on the story of the song, which details finding a corpse during a family picnic. Don’t let the airiness of “Life Fantastic” fool you though! There is a section of the song that Stereogum has described as a “…40-second Steve Vai shredding guitar solo in a chaotic break down at the the climax.”

Based off these two singles, it appears that Man Man has made a big step forward with their sound, and have really focused on certain elements of their music, rather than putting the focus on the use of multiple/random instruments. You might recall that in a previous post, we teased you with a new Justice track via an ADIDAS commercial. Well, the single is now receiving the video treatment, and the trailer (above) for “Civilization” is short, and sweet, and should give you a sense of what the full-length video will have to offer.

Because the trailer clip is only 11 seconds long, and the original TV commercial has ADIDAS advertisements in it, you won’t get the best listen to the single. So, hit play, below, and check out “Civilization” in all its glory.

After breaking up roughly 5 years ago, Gatsby’s American Dream has decided to reunite and record new music! This great news comes with a new single from the group titled “Modern Man,” which can be streamed by heading on over to the Gatsby’s website, and shooting three items into the pig’s mouth.

Anyone else note some social commentary from Gatsby’s through their incorporation of an “Angry Birds”-esque game that requires the user to shoot iPhones, rats, footballs, and other random items that are heavily embedded in our culture, into a pig’s mouth? How about the fact that the pig is wearing a suit? How about what the “pig” represents?

Take the game as you please, but make sure to enjoy “Modern Man” and keep an eye out for more releases from Gatsby’s American Dream in the near future.
