Voodoo Farm remixes Icebird’s “Charmed Life” and Florence + The Machine’s “Shake It Out”

October 24, 2011

Over the past few months, Liam Dirlam has released a steady flow of remixes under the Voodoo Farm moniker. Each new release from the Farm showcases new sounds and techniques that Dirlam is trying out as he masters his electronic craft. That being said, check out the Voodoo Farm remix of Icebird‘s single “Charmed Life.” While the original balances RJD2‘s soulful beats with the vocals of Aaron Livingston, Voodoo Farm’s remix features a brand new synth line and heavy backbeat, which gives the track a more airy feel and allows the vocals to dance around in your head.

Additionally, Voodoo Farm  has given Florence + The Machine‘s single “Shake It Out” the moombahton remix treatment. Not bad for his first moombahton track, eh?

LISTEN :: RJD2 releases ‘The Glow Remixes’ EP + two tracks from The Insane Warrior

January 4, 2011

While it may have taken us 3 days to settle in to 2011 before making our first post of the new year, don’t fret! We have returned with some fresh new jams from RJD2‘s label, RJ’s Electrical Connections!

To get things started, here are three new remixes of “The Glow”from RJD2′s latest LP The Colossus. On The Glow Remix EP, which is available to stream/download below, we see the work of Chicago’s Flosstradamus, the remix contest winner Paola, and Candy Panther.  Grab a listen here:

—

Additionally, RJ’s Electrical Connections is planning a February 1st release of a new project by RJD2, which will feature his side-project moniker The Insane Warrior.

From RJD2:

In a way, this album could be considered a soundtrack to a movie that doesn’t exist (at the moment). A strictly instrumental affair, the album “We Are The Doorways” was loosely inspired by horror and sci-fi film scores of the wonderfully fruitful period of 1976-1984. Several things mark this record – for one, there is a departure from the concise nature of most modern pop-oriented records. Expansive, open passages – often with no rhythmic elements – recall the work of both Eno and John Carpenter. These give way to spastic outbursts of energy in places. At other times, the tension-meets-groove aesthetic of Dario Argento’s pet Goblin give birth to some surprisingly funky cuts as well.

While heavily leaning on big, expansive analog synth sounds, angular rhythms, and blissful ambient passages, the record still maintains the attention to groove that RJD2′s label is known for. At times jazzy, psychedelic, and introspective, the exploratory nature of the music shines through. The Insane Warrior’s ‘We Are The Doorways’ is yet another unique landmark in the growing catalog of RJ’s Electrical Connections.

Take a listen to “The Water Wheel” and “Then You Hear Footsteps” below and make sure to grab a copy of the latter while it is available!

VIDEO :: Copywrite – “Tic-Toc” [production by RJD2]

November 23, 2010

Recently, the Columbus, Ohio emcee, Copywrite, released The Life and Times of Peter Nelson, which is the follow up to his 2002 debut The High Exhaulted. As you may have already guessed, Copyrwrite was born with the name Peter Nelson and the album details different stages in the emcee’s life.  The death of his close friend Camu Tao, the loss of his parents, and self pity, are all subjects that are addressed on the LP, which you can buy from here.

“Tic-Toc”was produced by RJD2 and shows Copy feeling down on himself and the events that have occurred over the years. While this might not seem like the brightest subject matter, the negativity is channeled into creativity and the duo of RJD2 + Copywrite = BANGER. RJ creates a deep, hip hop track for Copywrite to throw his fast paced lyrics over. Check out the video below …

LISTEN :: RJD2 – “Might As Well Step Forward” + “The Perfect Occasion”

June 22, 2010

As many of you know, RJD2 recently released The Colossus through his own label, RJ’S Electrical Connections. The album was a personal favorite and so I am quite excited to let y’all know about  Inversions of the Colossus which is the companion piece to the aforementioned Colossus. It is an all instrumental album that features tracks from the The Colossus sans vocals + a couple new tracks!

I went to to order the record earlier today sadly to find that the vinyl has sold out through RJ’S Electrical Connections. Luckily, I got the last one over at Amazon.com.

So, scour the interwebs and find yourself this gem on vinyl .. everything is better is vinyl. In the meantime, check out  “Might as Well Step Forward” + “The Perfect Occasion”  off Inversions below ..

WATCH :: RJD2 demonstrates the process of sampling on NPR

May 6, 2010

RJD2 recently recorded a segment for NPR’s World Cafe that takes us step-by-step through the process of creating sample-based music. Using his track “The Stranger,” RJ takes you from perusing the record store, to scrambling through sounds and movements on the record, to piecing tiny musical phrases together to create something new. This is great insight into the mind of one of today’s better producers/musicians and into the very detailed and tedious process behind the creation of much of today’s popular music.
