LISTEN :: Deadmau5 – “Raise Your Weapon” + “One Trick Pony” + “Soffi Needs a Ladder” + “Cthulu Sleeps”

October 19, 2010

Check out some new tracks that were recorded from a live set Deadmau5 performed on ustream on September 14th. Anyone seeing Deadmau5 in the near future? Let us know how it was! There are some NYC dates coming up in October but the going rate of $100+ for a ticket is way out of our budget.

LISTEN :: Gorillaz – “Doncamatic (All Played Out)” [ft. Daley]

October 5, 2010

While I am a tad bummed that I will not be in attendance at any of Gorillaz US tour dates, I am quite excited to know that they are recoding tracks amidst their travels. “Doncamatic (All Played Out)” is one of these “travel” tracks and it was premiered on Zane Lowe’s program over at BBC earlier today. Give it a listen in preparation for its official release on November 22nd.

Want more Gorillaz news?! Well check out this lovely tidbit of information thanks to OneThirtyBPM:

the band will be webcasting a full-length concert of theirs on Thursday. Following their scheduled appearance on Letterman, the band will stay in the studio to perform the show to be broadcast on CBS.com through the Live on Letterman concert webcast series.

Simple Concept in Need of Expansion

January 16, 2009

Back in November, I randomly hit up an Iron & Wine show at Terminal 5 in NYC.  When I first got there, a young girl was handing out business cards and asked me if I wanted to download the show in “perfect mp3 quality.”  I had already walked by her, assuming her promotion was going to be a waste of my time, but I immediately turned around to take one of her cards.  I looked deep, deep, into her (brown?) eyes and I whispered to her . . . “yoink.”  Enter www.playedlastnight.com.

The idea is simple.  Not only did they offer the show I went to (after a week . . . so more like playedlastweek.com), but they had virtually all of Iron & Wine’s recent tour from around the world.  This is great for having a remnant of a show that you attended, but also to check out a show you heard about in Edinburgh, but couldn’t make it to because it was your silhouette night with mother.  While concert recordings are a well established trend in music, playedlastnight.com is so appealing because of its expansive archive of shows.  This is great when an artist does something memorable in a particular show that you would not mind having on your iPod.  In my case, Sam Bean of Iron & Wine gave into the crowd’s cliché chants of “Freebird” and played a memorable 24 seconds.

The bad news is that the site is currently limited to contracts with only two artists.  At the moment they only cover Iron & Wine and The Swell Season (hence the need for expansion).  A show typically costs $9.99 to download, but don’t forget to google a promotional code that may be lingering out there to save you 50% or so.  After opting to download a show, I can also vouch for the quality of the recordings (playedlastnight.com’s employees were definitely members of the AV club in high school).  Hopefully this original concept will catch on and become the norm.  I know for a fact that I am not the only person to wish for a crisp audio recording of a show I enjoyed.  Can’t depend on HBO to make a documentary of every concert out there to save your memory for you☻
