[SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL RECORD STORE] Record Store Day (April 16, 2011) gives full details on releases

March 24, 2011

Record Store Day, which falls on April 16 this year, has certainly become a big to-do. Not only do many artists release exclusive records for the special occassion, but they do so in limited quantities, which makes for a hectic day of racing from store to store trying to track down the music you want.

As they have done in the past, RSD has released a PDF which details all of the exclusive releases, along with the amounts that are available. Grab it below, compile a list, and let us know what you’re looking to grab on April 16th!

Music for Perfect People celebrates Record Store Day!

April 19, 2010

This past Saturday, music lovers across the nation swarmed their local records shops in hopes of purchasing limited edition pressings and exclusive releases for Record Store Day. While Andy C. and myself did not make the record store crawl together, we did manage to stop in to our favorite shops and grab some sweet deals.

Oh! look what Mangtooth bought!

:: Mangtooth’s Purchases ::

@ Infinity Records
1.    LCD Soundsystem – “Pow Pow” 12” single
2.    The Black Keys – Tighten Up/ Howlin’ For You 12” single
3.    Fela Kuti 10” EP
4.    Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kinds – I Learned the Hard Way 12”
5.    Tom Waits – Mule Variations (11th Anniversary) 12” vinyl reissue w/exclusive Jim Jarmush photo of Tom [print]
6.    Happy Birthday – Shampoo/Alien 7”
@ Looney Tunes
1.    Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs – Dark Side of the Moon 12”
2.    Black Moth Super Rainbow – Eating Us extremely limited foil pressed double LP – hand numbered 422 of 500
3.    Built to Spill – “Water Sleepers” / “Linus and Lucy [LIVE]” 7”
4.    RX Bandits – Live @ Park Avenue – acoustic CD

Overall, my RSD was a success! I missed out on a couple singles/7”s I was hoping for but such is life. I am quite pleased with the hand numbered Black Moth but a tad upset with the Flaming Lips. The overall album is wonderful but there was supposed to be a limited pressing of the seafoam green vinyl ..  I purchased a copy that had a sticker  saying that this version WAS the green and NOT the clear. When I arrived at home, I found the packaging was wrong and my coop was in fact clear .. research on  interwebs has shown that this was a problem all over the US.

—————————————————————

Egads! Andy bought some items too ..

:: Andy C. Purchases ::

@ Generation Records
1.    Iggy & The Stooges “Raw Power” reissue
2.    Fucked Pp “Hidden World”/”Generation” limited edition 7″
3.    My Chemical Romance – I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love
4.    Brahms “Symphonie no.4: Tragic Overture” performed by the Weiner Philharmoniker and conducted by Leonard Bernstein – not RSD but was only 99¢!

@ Passout Records
1.    Prince – Dirty Mind
2.    Rick James – Glow

?? WHAT DID YOU BUY ??

RECORD STORE DAY :: UPDATE

March 31, 2010

If you live in New York City and love rock music, Generation Records is the greatest place ever.   On my last visit I snagged a Dead Weather deluxe double disc for $30, and a disintegrating Frampton Comes Alive! 12″ for $2 in one deft motion.  Generation also plays host to a ton of in-store performances, and for Record Store Day they’ve got local kids Cymbals Eat Guitars riding their BMXs over to jam out.  Walter Schreifels, The Obits, and some DJs will be there as well.  Visit Generationrecords.com for all the info.

Here’s Cymbals Eat Guitars at Northside Fest last year.  They played their asses off at SXSW ’10, and were second only to Surfer Blood in abundance of sets and wispiness of facial hair.

LIVE :: Fucked Up Tonight in Greenpoint

February 19, 2010

Tonight at Europa, the fine Canadian men (and woman) of Fucked Up are putting on a rock show.  This is supremely exciting. In November, they performed their Polaris Prize-winning The Chemistry Of Common Life from front to back, with vocal assists from Vivian Girls, and Andrew W.K. splashing some keys from time to time.  It was the first time I saw them live, but I was invited by my boss so I watched demurely from the balcony with him and his girlfriend.  Tonight will be different.  I will get facewashed by Pinkeyes’ bare belly.  I will thrash and flail and have a fantastic time with fantastic music and fantastic people.  I will buy whatever new 7″ they’ve recently released.

Speaking of which, Fucked Up are doing a pretty rad thing for Record Store Day 2010.  They’re a huge proponent of vinyl (having released about thirty five 7″ records in their time together,) so this year they’re issuing a 7″ of their two Daytrotter songs + “Crooked Head” to eleven record stores with eleven unique album covers.  The NYC participant is Generation Records, where they performed in-store ’bout a year and a half ago.  All details and partners are discussed on their blog. They’ve also just announced their participation in All Tomorrow’s Parties 2010.  Maybe this is the year I’ll visit that circle jerk.  Probably not though.

Video for “Black Albino Bones”, tunes start at 0:45.

-Andy C.

Record Store Day Presents .. VINYL SATURDAYS

June 4, 2009

In case you forgot, Record Store Day was April 18th.  You may be asking yourself why I would be discussing these matters two months later? Well, the kind folks who run Record Store Day have decided that a year is way too long to wait for another day to be dedicated to the purchasing of vinyls .. SO, June 20th marks the first of Vinyl Saturdays. Rumor has it that every third Saturday of the month will be Vinyl Saturday and independent record stores will hold the magic that is new releases by many artists in the form of vinyl.

June 20th’s Vinyl Saturday will release these gems:

WILCO : This is a special 7” single being released 10 days before new album, WILCO
(The Album) comes out on 6/30. This is a limited (3800) run of a 7” that includes these
tracks: “You Never Know” b/w “Unlikely Japan” (an early 2003 version of the track
“Impossible Germany,” previously unreleased.)

GREEN DAY : There is a vinyl version of the CD Single “Know Your Enemy” with a
street date of 6/20. This vinyl is limited to 5000 pieces, and is NUMBERED. The b-side
is an unreleased studio track called “Hearts Collide”.

MODEST MOUSE : There is a series of 7” singles being released (the first of which
streets next week). The second in the series is scheduled for a 6/23 street date. Sony
is allowing us to sell it on 6/20. HOWEVER, because of the street date, there is a
chance that the piece will not arrive in time for 6/20 sales. This second piece is called
Autumn Beds and the B-Side is “Whale Song”.

PETE YORN /SCARLETT JOHANSSEN
: These two are releasing an album in Sept
through Rhino and we have an advance 7” with a Duet from both of them and a Pete
Yorn demo on the other side

Thanks to Each Note Secure for the list of releases.

Morning News SmackDown 4.10

April 10, 2009

nmaqrn

The names of bands signing in support of the upcoming Record Store Day keep getting bigger.  The Derek Trucks Band has announced they will release a five track live EP called Already Live that will only be available at participating Record Stores on April 18th.  The EP will include live versions of I Know, Get What You Deserve, I Dont Got Over, I’ll Find My Way, and My Favorite Things.  You can click here for a list of participating shops.

crosby-stills-nash-2007-310x310Crosby Stills and Nash have announced they’ll be releasing an album of demos aptly titled Crosby Stills & Nash Demos.  The album will be primarily comprised of early versions of tracks from the members’ various solo albums.  The album is set to be released June 2nd.  You can head over to Jambase.com for a full track list.

040108_hayek_300x400The song Valentina off Prince’s new album MPLSoUND is garnering quite a bit of attention on these interweb airwaves.  In the song Prince sings Hey Valentina, tell you mama she should give me a call/When she gets tired of running after you down the hall/And she’s all worn out from those late night feedings/And she’s ready for another Rock N Roll Meeting.  Apparently “Valentina” is Selma Hayek’s daughter’s name.  Hayek directed the video for Pince’s 2005 song “Te Amo Corazon”.  Is it appropriate for a grown man to be propositioning a woman in a song directed at her daughter? Regardless, I’m sure Prince and Selma Hayek are having freaky sex right now.
