MP3 :: The Builders & The Butchers – “Rotten to the Core” + “Lullaby” video

February 24, 2011

Over the past few years of listening to their music and attending numerous live shows, I have grown to become a huge fan of the Portland quintet known as The Builders & The Butchers. In case you are unfamiliar, their sound is a wonderful blend of indie, folk and bluegrass, which is highlighted by the vocals of Ryan Solee.

Earlier this month, the Builders & The Butchers released their latest full-length Dead Reckoning and to give you a taste of what the album has to offer, check out the single “Rotten to the Core” below ..

Additionally, The Builders & The Butchers have released a video for the track “Lullaby,” which can also be found on Dead Reckoning.

DOWNLOAD :: BRAINSTORM – ‘Beast in the Sky’ 7”

November 18, 2010

The Portland duo known as BRAINSTORM released their Beast in the Sky 7” last month and we wanted to share with you their interesting take on experimental pop + soul. “Beast in the Sky” and “Word Up – Upward”  leave plenty of space for shredding guitar riffs and tuba bass lines as they travel through their odd rhythms and tempos. According to the band, the Beast in the Sky 7” is “a flurry of sounds referencing Colombian Cumbia, African High-Life, and noisy prog.” [via] Make sure to pick up your marbleized colored vinyl here.

From Lasercave records:

Beast in the Sky features 3 new songs by Brainstorm, Portland’s crowned kings of genre-bending gospel-pop.  Crushing riffs, explosive percussion, old world chanting, casio disco and jaunty tuba lines; Brainstorm “manages to sound like the entirety of Portland’s music scene whirled up in a blender, in a very good way.”

The Builders & The Butchers

February 26, 2009

For some reason or another, a large amount of my new music has been coming from the Portland, Oregon area — The sound is so different than the NYC ruckus I am exposed to all the time .. quite refreshing.

I just finished listening to the The Butchers & The Builder’s self titled album and I am quite pleased … Mangtoothy likes. They’re a group of musicians who produce sounds that are  mixture of folk, gospel, and a little bit of punk just for good measure. The best way I came up to describe them would be for you to take the Decemberists with their large range of instruments and lyrical content dealing with pirates, fisherman, and wenches .. tossing all that into a time machine and setting the dial to the 1849 Gold Rush in California .. this combination of strange events would result in THE BUTCHERS & THE BUILDERS .. The band describes themselves on their myspace as ” singing and shouting with guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, accordian, drums, xylophone, bells, and washboard.” .. if this sounds like something you’re into then sink your teeth into these live videos …

Go pick up the album .. its on itunes

P.S. I just found out they opened up for the Decemberists on one of their tours .. sooo take that!
