Music for Perfect People

On December 6th, Breathe Owl Breathe will be releasing a 7” for the singles “The Listeners” and “These Train Tracks,” along with a children’s book that was written, illustrated, carved, and printed by BOB’s Micah Middaugh.  Because each canvas-covered volume is being handcrafted and assembled by the band, the release will be limited to 750 copies. Pre-orders are currently available here.

While the lyrics of both of the singles follow the words/story in the childrens book, the sound of the two tracks are completely different. “The Listeners” features the combined vocals of Middaugh and a child, along with the delicate strumming of an acoustic guitar, minimal drum patterns, and some beautiful orchestral instruments. “These Train Tracks,” on the other hand, uses organic drum patterns created by handclaps, finger snaps, and what sounds to be a hand slapping a table, along with a repetitive synth line. What really stands out on “These Train Tracks” are the additional backing vocals, which act as another percussive instrument in the song, and really add another layer of sound to the story BOB is telling.

After my first listen through the LA-duo Electric Guest‘s tracks “Troubleman” and “American Daydream,” I thought to myself that their sound was very similar to Broken Bells‘ mellow pop with its crisp guitar and drum lines, haunting vocals, and wonderful accents of organ/synths. Then, much to my surprise, I stumbled upon the following post by KCRW:

“Despite being virtually unknown, they are one of the most promising unsigned bands in the world, aided by the fact that they’re managed by Monotone Inc. (Jack White, Vampire Weekend, The Shins, Cold War Kids) and produced by Brian Burton (AKA Danger Mouse).”

Danger Mouse? You mean half of Broken Bells? Apparently, my ears did not fool me!

Check out “Troubleman” and “American Daydream” (both in the player below), and make sure to take in all the electro, soul, and pop that the duo currently has to offer. Electric Guest’s debut LP will be released through Downtown Records at some point in 2012 (The AudioPerv points towards a release in Spring 2012.)

Earlier today, Chris Chu of The Morning Benders posted a new track titled “Oh Annie”, which did not make it on to the band’s 2010 release Big Echo. Oddly enough, Chu said that his “only regret with ‘Big Echo’ is that this song wasn’t on it. I wrote it after watching Annie Hall for the 100th time.”

Scattered Trees are a 6-piece indie rock band from Chicago whose sound falls somewhere between Luna and their Chicago brethren Wilco. Atlanta’s genre bending Spree Wilson has released the track “Don’t Pass Me By” from his upcoming debut The Never Ending Now. The production and honey dripped vocals of Esthero are predominantly featured on the track but it should also be noted that the backing beat was created by the eclectic noise-maker and MFPP favorite Hot Sugar.

The Brooklyn beat collective known as Astro Nautico is releasing its latest EP, Quiet Nights, on December 9th. Featuring tracks from all three Astro Nautico artists (Kuhn, Obey City, +weed) and guest spots from both sides of the Atlantic (Young Montana?, Termeric, InfinitiRock, Thirsty Jefferson), this compilation is unified by each artist’s interpretation/mix of the Brazilian jazz classic “Corcovado” as performed by Stan Getz.

Phasing tape hiss, crunchy vinyl pops and thunderous subs interface with classic bossa nova piano vamps, raw saxophone swag and the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Astrud Gilberto. This is as much a tribute to the depth of Brazilian songwriting as it is to modern electronic developments in the wake of dubstep and Dilla.

Seriously, this EP bumps. Relax+enjoy the preview below and make sure to cop Quiet Nights on December 9th!

The duo known as Ragsy (aka Kelly Barnes and Sutton Althisar) have put out an official video for their track “Lonely,” which is featured on the band’s debut, self-titled album.  While the track starts off with minimal instrumentation and the lone vocals of Althisar, the pace gradually picks up as the track progresses and Barnes adds her voice to the mix. After listening to RATATAT‘s latest release LP4 for a few months now, I can easily say that “Drugs” is the standout track for me on the album. The beat is undeniably dope and well .. the video for the track speaks for itself. To further the greatness of this track, Nguzunguzu has released a mellowed out remix of the “Drugs” which you can check out below (thanks to SKoA).

There isn’t anything overly complex about Canadian singer/songwriter Donovan Woods‘ music other than all the different emotions that pour forth from the speakers allowing his acoustic guitar and tender voice to hit your ears. His voice reminds me a bit of Ben Otwell from Gomez on occasion and the instrumentation and guitar work on his tracks are so mellow that your focus goes immediately back to the honesty in his voice. There’s no tricks here .. just a man pouring it all out for us to enjoy.

Philly indie poppers The Powder Kegs released their Empty Side EP earlier in the year and today was the day this wonderfully mellow set of songs finally hit my ears. The casual organ + maraca intro combined with the lovely honk of a  trumpet made “Shake Me Down”  the obvious track to post below … You can also download the entire EP over The Powder Kegs bandcamp page.
