Music for Perfect People

After one listen through Washed Out‘s Sub Pop debut Within and Without, you will get the sense that Ernest Greene’s one-man, bedroom project has evolved in a big way. Where earlier recordings give the sense that Greene was “trapped” in a room, with nothing more than an array of synthesizers, Within and Without features a larger sound that holds true to Washed Out’s distinct brand of lo-fi, chillwave, pop music.

On July 12th, Ernest Greene (aka Washed Out) will release his debut LP Within and Without through Sub Pop Records. Previously, we have heard the single “You and I,” and today we have “Echoes,” and “Amor Fati,” which translates from Latin to “love of fate.” The first 500 people to pre-order the LP will receive a bonus, limited edition 7″ featuring “Belong” b/w “Phone Call”, two tracks from the 2009 Washed Out High Times EP. With their debut Native set for release on June 14th, Is Tropical have have continued to bring more exposure to the album with their latest video for “The Greeks.” Here is what the band had to say about the video:

“We like kids, we like gangs, we really like daydreaming and imagination; the video straddles the line between nostalgia and the visual death-porn of our generation – the action film. Don’t get carried away by politics – this is a straight-up kid brawl the way it played out in your head when you were stealing your mum’s mascara to be like Arnie in Predator.”

With veiled faces, and a sound that is difficult to put your figure on, Is Tropical have released the single “The Greeks”, which can be found on the London trio’s debut effort, due out on June 13th. The band describes themselves as “bass heavy, beat driven, pop-influenced lo-fi dance music,” but take a listen to “The Greeks” and see for yourself.

The Parallax View, aside from being a 1974 thriller, is the musical project of New Jerey’s own Tyler Koykas. What makes this project run is Koykas’ determination to make his music get off the ground and in to your ears. Just by listening through his short (but sweet) catalog on bandcamp, you can see how the project has already begun to evolve! What started with The Flow Of Things (Early and Unfinished Works), an early experimentation of ambient sounds, lo-fi electronics, and different organ tones, has now become a more cohesive force with his Self-Titled Demos 2011 and the sneak peek into Mashed Brain Soup.

Eventhough The Parallax View is new to the scene, he has already signed on to Woozy Tribe, which was founded by Father LongLegs and serves a community of all different artists in the Northeast. Additionally, he is currently re-recording his Self-Titled Demos 2011 to be re-released as The Parallax View EP featuring production from Father LongLegs.

Once released, the self-titled EP will be accompanied by a DVD and the complete remix/mashup compilation Mashed Brain Soup. Appearing on the comp will be Father LongLegs, Eat The Soundtrack, LeadAcidGymnastics, Anarom, Bicycle Killer, Power Pill Fist, Slate, Zackey Force Funk, P.Bateman, and possibly yours truly!

From their upcoming Secret Serf EP that will be released on Jan 11th, here is the latest single from Tape Deck Mountain titled “It Goes Down”. This track is certainly for fans of layers and reverb but don’t let that sway you away! The airy vocals and large drums hold it all together quite nicely.

France is certainly not the first place I would expect surf rock to be coming out of but then again, I have been known to be wrong. Case in point, La Femme have an EP out titled Le Podium #1 which features bossy bass, drum-beat, theremin-infused guitar distortion and a cute-souding French girl commanding the vocals. [via] Below, we have the track “Sur La Planche” for you to check out, which loosely translates to “on the plate.”

In case you are not fluent in French, here are the translated lyrics to “Sur La Planche”:

I really came to fall in love with the whole lo-fi pop scene this summer, and I wanted to see what I could come up with. After writing “Let’s Fall Asleep Together”, the last three just sort of happened in the span of a few days. I know that it’s starting to get cold, and that carefree love songs about beach life may seem out of context, but I hope that you guys can look back on your past summer, and let these songs remind you of some of the good experiences you had!

The artist formerly known as Vektodrum has recently released his Telnet Erotika EP for free download under the new moniker Vektroid. With new writing processes, ideas, and projects comes new names and we shall see if this one sticks. Regardless, Telnet Erotika shows Vektroid toying with the “chillwave” movement, reforming it into a throwback to classic computer culture in an immense lo-fi trip.The genre? MS-DOS WAVE.

According to Vektroid:

It’s nighttime music—the sort of tunes that still contain the “glo-fi” nostalgic quality, but though a much different lens. This project revolves around past computer culture—cheap websites, the irrational-but-widespread fear of “hackers”, cheap videotapes of soccer moms trying to teach one-another to “SURF THE NET”, but most befittingly, the music that came with it. MIDI files dug up off your grandma’s website about cats (which your uncle so graciously helped her build), cassettes your parents listened to on their way home from work, and an almost dreamlike point of view, navigating omnisciently through it. The release treads a lot of territory, switching from some slowed down electro to remixed tape recordings of new wave tunes. I couldn’t define a genre for this release.

The track is certainly a DIY effort and while it is rough around the edges in nature, the sounds of lo-fi lazers + synths backed with distant vocals and shrieks should bring back some sort of memory from one of your “forgotten” encounters.

Pug Records is a DIY label  based out of Brazil that release all their materials digitally as a free mp3 or physically on cassette (or both!) They currently focus on lo-fi production which is perfect for the beautifully crafted cassettes that they sell! You should head over the Pug Records website and check out the what they have to offer ..

Speaking of what they have to offer, the label has just released Top Surprise‘s Everything Must Go EP on a gorgeous white cassette tape! The EP could certainly be considered “shitgaze” with its combination of 90′s noise pop, American college rock, and a subtle hint of post-punk.  The recording of the EP went about as lo-fi as it possibly could. According to PR,  the album was recorded “during two drunken days at brothers Andre and Daniel’s apartment. Vocals were recorded in the bathroom, guitars in the living room and drums in dad’s bedroom, to the neighbors’ despair.”
