Music for Perfect People

Earlier this month, we posted about the singles “16 Years” and “Don’t Move,” which will be featured on Phantogram‘s forthcoming mini-LP Nightlife. While hearing two of the six tracks from Nightlife held us over for a short while, we are pleased to announce that the wait is over as the band has now included a stream of the entire EP over on their facebook page.

A few months ago, we introduced you to The Parallax View at a time when Tyler Koykas’ musical project was new to the world. Since signing with the Woozy Tribe, TPV has released a number of EPs, all of which show a constant progression in his creation and assemblage of unique sounds.

The Parallax View comes up with a concept, idea, or feeling for a release by making some art.  When I last spoke with TPV, he felt that “a lot of people use photos as covers, [which are] pretty plain and the music always ends up pretty plain.” To combat this feeling, he began the creative process for his latest EP, Hip Slop, by taking a photo, rubbing a kitchen cleaner on it, and letting it sit for a few days to see what the final product would be.

Musically, the Hip Slop EP features the simple, tight beats of a hip hop album, combined with the dark, creepy, ambient tones of TPV’s keyboards. The end result is a mix of tracks that give  a “full band feel” even though they were created by a single artist.

Also in the works from The Parallax View is an October 13th re-release of the Hip Slop EP, which will come out on a limited run of cassettes, and will most likely include vocals on the original tracks by Bluebird Handwriting, B Side Malone, Vimana Aircraft, Body Cheetah, Rosko Taint, Messed Up Coyote, and Mauve Angeles. Please note that the final choice on the artists to be included on the re-release is still TBD.

Check out “Pretty Lights vs. Led Zeppelin,” the latest remix from Pretty Lights, which combines Derek Vincent Smith’s signature blend of electro with seven Led Zeppelin songs. By creating a collage of Led Zeppelin tracks and then adding elements of classic  rock, hip-hop, downtempo, and dubstep, Pretty Lights continues to bend genres, and redefines what it means to create a remix.

The Los Angeles based, independent hip-hop due known as People Under The Stairs are set to release their 8th studio album Highlighter on September 23rd. To get a taste of what’s to come, check out the first album teaser, below.

On July 26th, the legendary Wu-Tang Clan will release their latest compilation, Legendary Weapons, which will feature your favorite members of the Clan, along with some other special guests. Below, we have the tracklist for the release, as well as the Ghostface Killah single “Laced Cheeba,” which features Sean Price, and Trife Diesel.

The boys in Hail Mary Mallon, (aka Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, and DJ Big Wiz,) have released the video for “Garfield,” which is the second single off their forthcoming Are You Gonna Eat That? If you have yet to pre-order your physical copy of the release, I suggest you do so now. I received the double LP in the mail yesterday, and boy does it sound fantastic.

This past weekend, the Beastie Boys debuted their forthcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Part Two through a live Ustream, which broadcasted from a boombox that was placed in the center of Madison Square Garden. Now, a little over a week away from the official release of the album, the trio have uploaded the entire studio version of the album for you to stream!

On June 7th, Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, and DJ Big Wiz, will be releasing physical copies of Are You Gonna Eat That?, their debut effort under the Hail Mary Mallon moniker. We have seen snippets, and teasers of the project in the past, but now we have a video for the single “Smock.” So, hop into the Burgundy Camry with the Mallon Boys and enjoy “Smock.”

Are You Gonna Eat That? is available for pre-order through Fifth Element or iTunes. Physical copies will be released on June 7th, but digital copies of the album will be available  on May 3rd. I pre-ordered the LP, which comes on a limited custom printed gatefold jacket with double colored green vinyl with D Side etching.

Earlier today, Stones Throw announced the release of Madlib Medicine Show #9: Channel 85 presents Nittyville, which looks to be a full-length hip-hop album featuring Detroit’s Frank Nitt, Madlib (duh,) Oh No, and MED. There is currently a pre-order for the album, which will be available on May 31.
