WATCH :: trailer for Girl Talk’s New Year’s Eve 2009 short film

September 14, 2010

In a few short weeks we can all experience the insanity that occurred at the Congress Theater in Chicago last 12/31/09 as Girl Talk is releasing a short film on the event on 09/21/10.

Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) and his crew wanted to create the largest house party they could in order to ring in the new year and decided that the best route to do this was to construct a two-story house on stage. The house itself was completely furnished (down to a note on the refrigerator) and Girl Talk performed from a table that was covered by garden rocks in the front yard. Below, you can check out the teaser for the film!

Was anyone at this show? If so, leave a comment and tell us how dope it was!

Watch :: Rip! A Remix Manifesto

March 9, 2010

If you have any interest in sampling and copyright infringement,  the film Rip! A Remix Manifesto (TMT Review) is certainly for you.

From Snag Films:

“In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age

Filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy?

The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.”

My Bonnaroo 2009 Experience

June 29, 2009

photo(3)

Bonnaroo has been a festival that I have always wanted to be a part of but due to school, funds, work, etc .. I was never able to make the trip  .. that is of course until this year. Finally, after years of waiting, I made it to the 4 day music festival in the Manchester, Tennesee that took place between Thursday, June 11th and Sunday, June 14th. A lot can be said of the festival that kicks music off at noon and ends at 6AM the following morning .. sleep was for the weak, food + shelter were for the prepared .. and then there was the crew I was with. There is no reason for me to explain  the campgrounds, vendors, walking around, etc .. this can all be checked out at Bonnaroo.com. I will, however, give you the list of shows that I saw and a blurb about each ..

Thursday, June 14th

5:45 – 6:45 PM, The Other Tent – JANELLE MONAE

I had heard about Janelle Monae a few months back and really dug her powerful voice and the sweet beats that accompanied her .. being that this was the first show at the Roo I got to see, I was quite excited. Ms. Monae hit the stage and the dance party could finally begin. Her band consists of one DJ, a drummer (whose robot stare into the crowd + fancy drumstick maneuvers WOWed the crowd,) and a guitarist (who certainly looked like Katt Williams.) The set consisted of almost every song off her release Metropolis.

6:45 – 7:45 PM, This Tent – WHITE RABBITS

The White Rabbits, hailing from Brooklyn by way of Missouri, have been cranking through my speakers for some time now. Once the music video for Percussion Gun came out, I was hooked. I was especially excited to see these guys perform with two drummers on stage. While I may not have been as close as I would have liked, the energy from the band rung all around the open field surrounding the This Tent. From the outside, it appears everyone was having fun .. band and fans alike.

8:30 – 9:30 PM, That Tent – Portugal. The Man

I’m not going to lie .. Portugal. The Man performing at Bonnaroo was one of the deciding factors in my attendance to the festival. While they may not be a HUGE, high publicized band (yet) .. their live show and energy was just too much for me to back down. Upon arriving at the Tent, I found that I was not the only one who shared these feelings regarding the band .. there was hundreds of folks there all pumped to see this Portland/Alaska rock outfit perform. The sun had gone down, the lights were cranked, and finally .. P.TM arrived on stage. The band moved through songs from all three of their released albums AND even gave us a treat with a new song, “People Say” — Right as the band was winding down their set, the skies could hold no longer and they opened up and rained some cold H2O onto the sweaty bodies that were once shaking for Portugal. The Man.

Below is the setlist from their electric set (unfortunately I missed the band’s acoustic set on Friday morning) and a video of their first two songs at the Roo.

SETLIST

Jam/Church Mouth/One
Lay Me Back Down
And I
New Orleans
Bellies Are Full
People Say
My Mind
Horse Warming Party
1989
AKA M80 The Wolf

Friday, June 12th

2:45 – 4:00 PM, Which Stage – Animal Collective

I have never been able to get into this band. Saw them live once down at the South Street Seaport and couldn’t dig it. Bonnaroo was no different.

I’m not hating. I’m just saying.

3:45 – 5:00 PM, What Stage – Galactic

5:00 – 6:00 PM, Which Stage – Yeah Yeah Yeahs

6:00 – 7:30 PM, What Stage – Al Green

This man still has some of the swankiest moves. He was hitting all these high notes and handing out roses to the ladies in the crowd. Come on .. that’s classy ladies and gentlemen.

8:30 – 10:00 PM, What Stage – Beastie Boys

The party could finally start on this long Friday once the Beastie Boys hit the stage. The band rolled through a ton of their hits, graced us by hopping on to their instruments of choice to play some funk jams, AND invited out Nas to perform a track off their upcoming release HotSauce Committee.

11:00 PM – 12 AM, What Stage – Phish

2:15 AM – 4AM, This Tent – Paul Oakenfold + That Tent – Girl Talk

I was kinda excited to finally check out Girl Talk .. I have never listened to any of his albums completely but I figured at 3AM, a dancy [party was exactly what I was lookking for. While the dancing was going off, Girl Talk was not firing on all cylinders .. this made my move to see Paul Oakenfold a tad easier. Girl Talk had some moves .. but NONE compared to the rave party that was happening at Oakenfolds set. There were bodies of the tired strewn all over the fields outsdie the tent and a mass of glowsticks and bodies moving with each other on the inside.

Saturday, June 13th

5:15 – 6:30 PM, This Tent – Of Montreal

Of Montreal was a solid way to start the day .. at 5:15 in the evening. The day before burnt me out pretty hard so I stayed at the camp site where I could escape the sun. I have only heard good thing about this band’s live show and I can now see why people have so much fun. They wear ridiculous outfits, dance around a lot, and just seem to have fun. I can’t really say much more due to the fact that I couldnt barely see what was going on the stage .. it looked like there were dancing midgets .. (?)

7:15 – 8:45 PM, Which Stage – The Mars Volta

I have seen the Mars Volta numerous times at this point but I still had to go see them. Who wouldnt wanna check out Thomas Pridgen wail on the drums, Omar Rodriguez Lopez shred on the guitar, and Ceddrix Bixlar-Zavala squeel through the microhpoheon and gyrate all over the stage? They put on a solid set which contained tracks from all their albums. Cedric’s douchebaggery shined through as per usual with his banter to the crowd ..

1:00 – 3:00 AM, Which Stage – Nine Inch Nails

I have never listened to any NIN songs before going to see this. The group I was with was all about getting as close as possible and I am really glad they forced me to move up with them. NIN put ona  hell of a show with lights that were so bright I really think that I am now partially blind .. According to Trent Reznor, this was the band’s last set in the United States .. EVER. We shall see if this is true ..

2:15 – 3:45 AM, That Tent – MGMT

MGMT on record are not that bad .. or atleast werent that bad when I first listened to their album. MGMT live, in my opinion, are pretty awful. The crowd seemed really into their vibes but I for some reason was not impressed. It could have been the fact that NIN just blew my mind and MGMT jus werent kicking at that hard .. or that I had slept 8 hours in 3 or 4 days and have had the diet of a starving child. MGMT did perform a new track off an album slotted to be released in 2010 according to the band.

Sunday, June 14th

6:00 – 7:30 PM, What Stage – Snoop Dogg

Come on .. its the motherfucking Snoop D – O – double G .. Snoop Dogg kicked it out a bunch of his hits and then brought out the lovely Erykah Badu for a song or two. Sunday was the most relaxing of the days at Bonnaroo .. laying in a field listening to Snoop was just awesome.

8:30PM  – 12:00 AM, What Stage – Phish

————————————–

Overall, Bonnaroo IS an experience .. the best description I saw was scribbled in one of the porta-pottys .. it said “Welcome to Bonnaroo .. the closest to freedom you will EVER be .. “
