Most of you might remember Mattie Safer as the former bassist for a little electro-dance group known as The Rapture. Since his departure from the aforementioned group, Mr. Safer has been working on some solo material and his first release comes in the form of the Christmas song “O Holy Night”.
In regards to the track Mr. Safer said:
I’ve included several different versions here. First, the main mix. It’s a Christmas song and as such it’s a little different, a little special, and thus not entirely representative of what I’ve been up to (anymore so than “Christmas In Hollis” is representative of what Run DMC’s entire catalog sounds like)., but it is probably indicative of a certain aspect of what I’ve been up to, and I like it. We been calling it “Future Gospel” for laughs, you can call it whatever you like…
I’ve also included a more traditional version, which features voice and guitar. This one is perhaps a bit more “Christmas-y.” More appropriate perhaps for the Christmas Eve fireside set.
Finally, I’ve included the acapella and instrumental tracks as tools for those of you who like that sort of thing.

The good folks over at The Daily Download have released The Death Set‘s cover of The Cure‘s Three Imgainary Boys track “Grinding Halt”.
In regards to the cover, Johnny Siera said:
“Was lying in bed at a babe’s house passing in and out of consciousness while she was fluttering about downstairs. She put “Grinding Halt” on and I automatically woke up thinking “who is this ’77 punk rock act?” When she told me I instantly remembered again and got stoked that this song featured on the same album as “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Killing An Arab”. We decided to cover it while throwing up.”

Diane Birch teamed up with The Phenomenal Handclap Band to create the album The Velveteen Age, which will be available on iTunes December 7th via S-Curve Records. While I haven’t gotten my hands on the full-length yet, check out “Bring on the Dancing Horses” [Echo & The Bunnymen cover,] “Kiss Them For Me” [Siouxsie and the Banshees cover] and “This Corrosion”. These three tracks will surely satisfy your retro soul craving.

While only Queens [of the Stone Age] aficionados and [Tom] Waits maniacs are generally familiar with the track, it was released three years ago as part of an EP package for Sick, Sick, Sick, the first single from the band’s most recent Rock juggernaut Era Vulgaris. The extended single includes takes on Elliott Smith’s Christian Brothers and Wait’s Bone Machine classic, as well as a remixed version of I’m Designer. Pick it up here.

As you should all know by now, LCD Soundsystem released a killer album this year called This is Happening. What you might not know (I sure didn’t) is that the digital release came with a bonus track called “Throw” which is a cover of a Carl Craig song of the same name.
Carl Craig hails from Detroit and is most known for his dirty techno/house music along with his own record label Planet E. According to OneThirtyBPM, “this Fall it appears as though “Throw” will finally be available physically, set to be released as the B-Side to a re-release of “Throw” on Craig’s own Planet E records.”

Combine the Midwest super group Gayngs with Har Mar Superstar and enjoy yourself a cover of George Michael’s “One More Try.” Relayted is one of my favorite albums of the year so it should come as no surprise that we are very excited about sharing this track with you!

Let the Anamanaguchi overload begin!
I should probably start off by clarifying that the “new” singles I spoke about in the title to this post are in fact new tracks .. but they were the first of the group’s series of summer singles. I somehow managed to miss posting these earlier and for that, I apologize.
Regardless, grab yourself a copy of the tracks “Airbrushed” and “Penpal” below and don’t forget to also take a listen to the video-game-loving quartet’s “Party Stronger” which was one of the tracks they recorded for the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World game soundtrack.

A rare Tom Waits version of the 1965 James Brown soul classic “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag.” Less a cover of the original Brown penned masterpiece than an ingenious and maniacal reinterpretation recorded live in 1987 at Massey Hall in Toronto Canada during the “Frank‘s Wild Years” tour. On stage that night are Tom Waits on vocals, piano, bullhorn, Marc Ribot: guitars, banjos, trumpet, Willy Schwarz (introduced as Willie ‘the squeeze’) on accordion, organ, keyboards, Ralph Carney: saxophones, clarinet, bass clarinet, marimba, violin, baritone horn, harmonica, Greg Cohen: upright/ electric bass, box electric and Michael Blair on drums & percussion.
