Cast Spells releases videos for “Glamorous Glowing” + “Pioneer Scalps” [cameo by Horatio Sanz]

November 10, 2010

With it’s release being late last summer, Cast Spells‘ Bright Works and Baton is finally getting some of the music video treatment. “Glamorous Glowing” is up first and in the video we see a set of colored blocks coordinating their lighting to the sounds of the different instruments. As this Lite Brite-esque mass floats around the different nature and urban scenes, I cannot help but think that this should be featured on a commercial for Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. Anyone else agree?

The second video, however, isn’t an “official” music video by Cast Spells per say. Phil Thomas Katt put together the video for Dovecote Records and featured the music of Cast Spells in it. Oddly enough, the Saturday Night Live alumn Haratio Sanz is featured.

VIDEO :: Cast Spells – “Glamorous Glowing” [ft. Maps & Atlases + Teri Gender Bender][GLASSROOM SESSION]

September 28, 2010

In my eyes, the Glassroom Sessions have now become a staple in the Sargent House. Every time band members of a group on their roster stops in for a visit or a short stay, they record a track live in this beautiful space. Today, we have Dave Davison (aka Cast Spells) being joined by his bandmates in Maps & Atlases and Teri Gender Bender (of Le Butcherettes) in the Glassroom Session of “Glamorous Glowing.”

Cast Spells + Good Old War played Brooklyn!

December 10, 2009

The Cast Spells and Good Old War tour kicked off last week at the new Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. This was my first experience at the venue and certainly a solid one. The room is much more open than the older version in Manhattan, the atmoshphere is not as dingy, and the beers were a tad tastier. As for the music, the opener was Hezekiah Jones who blended indie and folk together into soft jams that really set a great mood for the rest of the evening. Next up was Dave Davison’s (Maps & Atlases, Hey Tonal) folky side-project Cast Spells. The beauty of Cast Spells shows are that he uses whatever headliner is staged for the tour as a backing band .. luckily for us, this was Good Old War. He played his jams from the Bright Works and Baton EP and a few others from the Good Old War / Cast Spells split EP.

Enjoy “Glamorous Glowing” by Cast Spells .. featuring Good Old War ..

To close the night, Good Old War reassembled on stage as  their usual three piece and played through a large portion of the tracks on Only Way to Be Alone along with the two tracks from the split and a new track from their upcoming album! The show was most excellent. For me, the standout points during the Good Old War set were: finding it was Dan’s (the guitarist from Good Old War) 30th birthday, the guitar battle between Dave Davison (who joined Good Old War on stage for one song) and Dan during “Weakerman,” and the first time I heard the track “Texas Blues” live .. you can check the video of “Texas Blues” below ..

CONCERT REVIEW :: Cast Spells – 07.28.09 – Brooklyn, NY

July 29, 2009

Last night in Brooklyn, magic happened. It wasn’t David Blane or any of that rabbit-out-of-a-hat nonsense .. Instead,  Cast Spells, the side project of Maps & Atlases’ frontman Dave Davison, played a show at Union Hall (a personal favorite.)

A small crowd gathered in the basement venue  to enjoy the sweet sounds of  Mr. Davison, who was accompanied by a cellist and the drummer from So Many Dynamos.  While I have not gotten a chance to listen to the Cast Spells’ EP Bright Works and Baton (still waiting for it to ship .. grrr,) this did not subtract from the experience as the trio rolled through the lovely folky tunes off the album and I sipped on some delicious brews from the bartender.

Check out some videos I took from the show (please excuse the shoddy camera work and the poor sound quality at some point .. there is only so much one can do with a phone):

Overall, Cast Spells was a great time and the music was beautiful (as expected.) Sargenthouse has picked up a gem with Cast Spells and I suggest you purchase Bright Works and Baton at your earliest convenience.

Smörgåsbord

March 18, 2009

Another week has passed and look where we are together again friends .. I think I’ll throw some random news and whatnot at you … open up ‘cause here it comes ..

———————————————————————————-

Mos Def is set to release a new album titled The Ecstatic sometime this summer .. some new tracks are posted up on his myspace page. Exciting news since it has been quite a while since Mos Def has let out some new work .. in fact, 2006 was his last solo work!

———————————————————————————-

Also on the release slate is a reissue of the Beastie Boys album Check Your Head. The album will be expanded and reissued on April 7th .. keep a look out!

Originally released in April 1992, Check Your Head was a milestone for Beastie Boys on many levels: It was the first B Boys album to be produced in its entirety by Mario Caldato Jr. and to feature keyboard player Keyboard Money Mark, as well as the first to be recorded at the band’s own G-Son studios in Atwater Village, CA. Most significantly, however, Check Your Headmarked the return of live instrumentation to the forefront and backbone of the Beastie Boys sound, with the bulk of the album featuring Mike D on drums, Adrock on guitar and MCA on bass for the first time since the band’s early 1980s hardcore punk recordings.

Thanks musicnewsnet for the update

————————————————————————————————————-

An early retirement is in the works for Kid Cudi .. apparently the 24 year old, Cleveland born rapper has decided to hang in the towel and leave the music business. According to the Kid, “After the release of my first LP this summer, I am not making any more solo albums. I am falling back on being an artist. The drama that comes with it is more overwhelming than the shit I was dealing with when I was piss poor broke.” (theboombox.com) Respectable? Indeed. The rapper also goes on to explain that he has a strong fanbase and that he can now afford to help his family pay bills and doesn’t hold any regrets in ending it. Peace out Kid Cudi ..

———————————————————————————————————————

As far as listening goes, y’all should check out Cast Spells .. the solo project of Dave Davison from Maps & Atlases .. support good music and those who work so god damn hard to bring you this beauty by checking out other bands from SARGENT HOUSE RECORDS!

————————————————————————————————————–

To wrap this, I need to throw in an OH SNAP! Not only is the following a sweet jam by Portugal. The Man BUT whats this in the middle of the sweet sounds? A Ghostface cover? Thats right! A kilo is worth 1000 grams my friends ..

———

Respect. In Mangtooth we trust ..
