I am quite pleased to announce that Beck has taken on different members to join his latest installment of the Record Club as I was beginning to get a tad tired of the INXS covers. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and Tortoise comprise the new roster of the project so stay tuned for more goodness.
According to Beck:
This installment of the Record Club takes on ‘Yanni Live At The Acropolis’. The original album featured Yanni with a full orchestra at the Athenian Acropolis. A TV special of the concert was played repeatedly on PBS through the mid 90’s. To flesh out and capture the complex arrangements, several studio musician heavyweights were brought in to read a heavily doctored score with interpolations of everything from Stravinsky to Shania Twain (look for others). Beck and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth provided auxiliary music and noise, with Thurston improvising lyrics over the previously instrumental track ‘Santorini.’ The new lyrics give the track an added urgency and pathos. Tortoise show up later on a few other tracks.

Comments rss TrackbackTechnically, this a product of Beck’s Record Club even though Beck is the only recording member present in this video. “Loved One” features Beck strumming away on an acoustic guitar, tossing some sweet lines with a slide guitar, and laying in some backing percussing via a tambourine.

On May 25th, Tom Fec (aka Tobacco) will be releasing his latest effort Maniac Meat through Anticon records. After listening to the leaked album (sorry Tom .. I pre-ordered the double LP!) and catching a live performance last weekend at the Knitting Factory, I can easily say that his music and style are by far some of the most “out there” things I have experienced … who else do you know that combines delicious 80′s/90′s hip-hop beats with analog synths and vocoder vocals all recorded on to tape? If you need more proof that Maniac Meat is a must buy, check out the previously posted tracks “Sweatmother” and “Fresh Hex” (featuring Beck) or stream the newly released “Motorlicker.”
