My Bonnaroo 2009 Experience

June 29, 2009

photo(3)

Bonnaroo has been a festival that I have always wanted to be a part of but due to school, funds, work, etc .. I was never able to make the trip  .. that is of course until this year. Finally, after years of waiting, I made it to the 4 day music festival in the Manchester, Tennesee that took place between Thursday, June 11th and Sunday, June 14th. A lot can be said of the festival that kicks music off at noon and ends at 6AM the following morning .. sleep was for the weak, food + shelter were for the prepared .. and then there was the crew I was with. There is no reason for me to explain  the campgrounds, vendors, walking around, etc .. this can all be checked out at Bonnaroo.com. I will, however, give you the list of shows that I saw and a blurb about each ..

Thursday, June 14th

5:45 – 6:45 PM, The Other Tent – JANELLE MONAE

I had heard about Janelle Monae a few months back and really dug her powerful voice and the sweet beats that accompanied her .. being that this was the first show at the Roo I got to see, I was quite excited. Ms. Monae hit the stage and the dance party could finally begin. Her band consists of one DJ, a drummer (whose robot stare into the crowd + fancy drumstick maneuvers WOWed the crowd,) and a guitarist (who certainly looked like Katt Williams.) The set consisted of almost every song off her release Metropolis.

6:45 – 7:45 PM, This Tent – WHITE RABBITS

The White Rabbits, hailing from Brooklyn by way of Missouri, have been cranking through my speakers for some time now. Once the music video for Percussion Gun came out, I was hooked. I was especially excited to see these guys perform with two drummers on stage. While I may not have been as close as I would have liked, the energy from the band rung all around the open field surrounding the This Tent. From the outside, it appears everyone was having fun .. band and fans alike.

8:30 – 9:30 PM, That Tent – Portugal. The Man

I’m not going to lie .. Portugal. The Man performing at Bonnaroo was one of the deciding factors in my attendance to the festival. While they may not be a HUGE, high publicized band (yet) .. their live show and energy was just too much for me to back down. Upon arriving at the Tent, I found that I was not the only one who shared these feelings regarding the band .. there was hundreds of folks there all pumped to see this Portland/Alaska rock outfit perform. The sun had gone down, the lights were cranked, and finally .. P.TM arrived on stage. The band moved through songs from all three of their released albums AND even gave us a treat with a new song, “People Say” — Right as the band was winding down their set, the skies could hold no longer and they opened up and rained some cold H2O onto the sweaty bodies that were once shaking for Portugal. The Man.

Below is the setlist from their electric set (unfortunately I missed the band’s acoustic set on Friday morning) and a video of their first two songs at the Roo.

SETLIST

Jam/Church Mouth/One
Lay Me Back Down
And I
New Orleans
Bellies Are Full
People Say
My Mind
Horse Warming Party
1989
AKA M80 The Wolf

Friday, June 12th

2:45 – 4:00 PM, Which Stage – Animal Collective

I have never been able to get into this band. Saw them live once down at the South Street Seaport and couldn’t dig it. Bonnaroo was no different.

I’m not hating. I’m just saying.

3:45 – 5:00 PM, What Stage – Galactic

5:00 – 6:00 PM, Which Stage – Yeah Yeah Yeahs

6:00 – 7:30 PM, What Stage – Al Green

This man still has some of the swankiest moves. He was hitting all these high notes and handing out roses to the ladies in the crowd. Come on .. that’s classy ladies and gentlemen.

8:30 – 10:00 PM, What Stage – Beastie Boys

The party could finally start on this long Friday once the Beastie Boys hit the stage. The band rolled through a ton of their hits, graced us by hopping on to their instruments of choice to play some funk jams, AND invited out Nas to perform a track off their upcoming release HotSauce Committee.

11:00 PM – 12 AM, What Stage – Phish

2:15 AM – 4AM, This Tent – Paul Oakenfold + That Tent – Girl Talk

I was kinda excited to finally check out Girl Talk .. I have never listened to any of his albums completely but I figured at 3AM, a dancy [party was exactly what I was lookking for. While the dancing was going off, Girl Talk was not firing on all cylinders .. this made my move to see Paul Oakenfold a tad easier. Girl Talk had some moves .. but NONE compared to the rave party that was happening at Oakenfolds set. There were bodies of the tired strewn all over the fields outsdie the tent and a mass of glowsticks and bodies moving with each other on the inside.

Saturday, June 13th

5:15 – 6:30 PM, This Tent – Of Montreal

Of Montreal was a solid way to start the day .. at 5:15 in the evening. The day before burnt me out pretty hard so I stayed at the camp site where I could escape the sun. I have only heard good thing about this band’s live show and I can now see why people have so much fun. They wear ridiculous outfits, dance around a lot, and just seem to have fun. I can’t really say much more due to the fact that I couldnt barely see what was going on the stage .. it looked like there were dancing midgets .. (?)

7:15 – 8:45 PM, Which Stage – The Mars Volta

I have seen the Mars Volta numerous times at this point but I still had to go see them. Who wouldnt wanna check out Thomas Pridgen wail on the drums, Omar Rodriguez Lopez shred on the guitar, and Ceddrix Bixlar-Zavala squeel through the microhpoheon and gyrate all over the stage? They put on a solid set which contained tracks from all their albums. Cedric’s douchebaggery shined through as per usual with his banter to the crowd ..

1:00 – 3:00 AM, Which Stage – Nine Inch Nails

I have never listened to any NIN songs before going to see this. The group I was with was all about getting as close as possible and I am really glad they forced me to move up with them. NIN put ona  hell of a show with lights that were so bright I really think that I am now partially blind .. According to Trent Reznor, this was the band’s last set in the United States .. EVER. We shall see if this is true ..

2:15 – 3:45 AM, That Tent – MGMT

MGMT on record are not that bad .. or atleast werent that bad when I first listened to their album. MGMT live, in my opinion, are pretty awful. The crowd seemed really into their vibes but I for some reason was not impressed. It could have been the fact that NIN just blew my mind and MGMT jus werent kicking at that hard .. or that I had slept 8 hours in 3 or 4 days and have had the diet of a starving child. MGMT did perform a new track off an album slotted to be released in 2010 according to the band.

Sunday, June 14th

6:00 – 7:30 PM, What Stage – Snoop Dogg

Come on .. its the motherfucking Snoop D – O – double G .. Snoop Dogg kicked it out a bunch of his hits and then brought out the lovely Erykah Badu for a song or two. Sunday was the most relaxing of the days at Bonnaroo .. laying in a field listening to Snoop was just awesome.

8:30PM  – 12:00 AM, What Stage – Phish

————————————–

Overall, Bonnaroo IS an experience .. the best description I saw was scribbled in one of the porta-pottys .. it said “Welcome to Bonnaroo .. the closest to freedom you will EVER be .. “

Organized Chaos ROUND 1

January 28, 2009

Welcome to this beautiful mess I, the good Dr. Mangtooth, like to call THE MANGLED BAG OF TRICKS. Check back here every Wednesday for new audio and video updates, and other rants, links, etc …

For lack of a better jump-off point, and since this was deemed the perfect start to Woodstock in 1969, I feel that this is good enough for all you cats as well …

Now that we have introductions out of the way and Richie Havens has your freed blood flowing, we can move on to this sweet album I found out about last week. .. DJ Signify’s newest release, Of Cities (released on Bully Records January 20th, 2009). In case you haven’t heard of DJ Signify (http://www.myspace.com/djsignify), he is hip-hop producer currently hailing from Brooklyn, NY and is known largely for his mix tapes in the mid-90′s along with his spot in the legendary 1200 Hobos crew. Of Cities is a dirty instrumental album that mixes a large variety of genres together while being heavily driven by the big sound of the drums.

Of Cities Cover Art

Of Cities Cover Art

This album is perfect for the winter months as any one of you is trekking to the bodega for a 40 or to the local watering hole for a pint. There are in fact some lyrics spun into the mix so don’t let the “instrumental album” aspect scare you … this is not an album to toss on in the background to some mundane task. The tracks “Low Tide” and “Sink or Swim” feature Strong Island’s own AESOP ROCK. Aesop serves his purpose on this album by reminding listeners that dope beats DO deserve to have some lyrics thrown on top of them.

Give Of Cities a go and see if the big sound is something you can wrap your little head around. I enjoyed it and I hope the best to you and your heavily humped eardrums.

———————————————————————————————————

Moving right along … I have noticed a large portion of music blogs and websites have been drooling over the new Animal Collective CD. What better way to remind everyone of the origination of spooky sounds and sweet synthesizers than some videos! The first video is the legendary Herbie Hancock playing with some “technologically advanced” machines … back in the day when they were in fact advanced.  The second video is some creep playing a Buchla 200. Both remind me of some Ghostbusters type shiiiiiit but you get the point.  The third video is the famous song POPCORN. It was one of the first synthpop instrumental jams back in the 70′s. I found this song on vinyl a few weeks ago and had to purchase it .. not only because it is somewhat hilarious to listen to but I do recall at some point in my early life, my mother used to play this song to her dear sweet baby Mangtooth. The fourth and final synthesizer video is the old school MiniMoog Voyager in action.

Respect the past and the enjoy the videos all you synthheads out there …

—————————————————————————————————————

Just a little recording side note …. The RX Bandits (http://www.rxbandits.com,) from the West Coast of this beautiful nation, are heading back into the studio in early February to record their latest work which should be released on the bands own Mash Down Babylon Records (http://www.mdbrecords.com).  Here is a video of Matt Embree and the Bandits rehearsing in their home studio, The Elizabethen.

————————————————————————————————————–

Well it appears its time to close this bag of tricks for the week but how could one leave you without some sweet soul music to get you through until next Wednesday’s audio overdose! Enjoy Nina Simone and her wonderfully sung “Ain’t Got No … I’ve Got Life.”

Animal Collective – My Girls Music Video

January 22, 2009

I know we’ve been on AC overload these last few days, but I thought you might be interested in seeing the music video for the first single off Merriweather Post Pavilion  ”My Girls”.  It kind of reminds me of one of those silhouette IPod commercials.

Animal Collective “Merriweather Post Pavillion”

January 22, 2009

200px-animal_collective_merriweather ”A dancer who was high in a field from a moment”

That line opens up this beautiful work of art. There are many lyrics to this album. Sometimes I know what they are. Sometimes I don’t. I was reading them before I wrote this, because I felt I should be more familiar with the greater meaning of the songs but that really doesn’t matter. See this is beautiful music. It’s detailed and layered. There is much going on. There is much to love.

It’s not the lyrics that make it beautiful. With the best albums it rarely is. They tend to be the icing on the cake. See I “got” this album as soon as I heard it. Let me explain my initial reactions.

First, I thought it was good. I didn’t think it was great or amazing. The second track “My Girls” was catchy and it stuck with me. I didn’t know the lyrics, but I could kind of hum them. I knew the beat. The next day I put it on again. On the second listen I heard something completely different. It reminded me of every show I’ve been to. At times it had the energy, other times it reminded me of the scene. Most of the time it reminded of the enviroment. My favorite shows have been outdoors. The Pines Theater in Northhampton or the Saratoga Springs Performing Arts Center. Sometimes a venue in a truly majestic place will make a show. I understand Mountain Jam is like this.

Animal Collective manages to capture this vibe. Like I said, on that second listen I heard a different album. That caught me off guard. On my thrid listen I heard a new album. I started to love different songs at different times. Some songs, like “My Girls” or “Brothersport” got me cheering and yelling. Some got my tappin out the beat. Some got me dancing. I fell deeply in love with this album in a way I rarely do.

I can’t reccomend this strongly enough.

This sounds like an album made outside in a beautiful place. Each song has deep crevices filled with sonic joy. You will get something new out of every spin. I caught myself humming “Bluish” today. I wasn’t singing the lyrics. I was doing the beat. It’s one of the catchier tunes and it is amazing. I was planning on writing this and not discussing the lyrics. They are there, and they are an important part of the music but I’m going to be honest. I’ve listened to the album 22 times (thanks iTunes) and I’m just starting to pick up on them. In reading them I have realized I will love them. They capture youth and going to shows and partying. This reminds me of summers in high school. I want to stress that the lyrics aren’t bad. They are just another layer to the music. At times the vocals just feel like another instrument. Other times a chorus will be contagious.

After about five listens I wanted to know what the album was about. I knew it shared its title with a venue. I remember discussing with a friend on a long car drive the possibilities. We kind of decided that they must have recorded part of it there. I finally decided to research it and was pretty floored by what I found.

The album was made to symbolize an outdoor listening experience. The venue made Animal Collective think of this, thus the title. What floored me was how well the album created this feeling. Right off the bat I thought this would be a great listen in the summer, in the grass of some ampitheater. I wanted to hear it performed at Pines Theater.

Animal Collective created an album that perfectly encapsulated what they were trying to express. It’s an album that sounds new on every listen yet still manages to sound catchy and fun. It will pull you in time and time again. Come the summer I will try hard, very hard, to hear this outside. The way it was meant to be.

This is what ears were made for.

Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion

January 21, 2009

acAnimal Collective’s new album Merriweather Post Pavilion dropped yesterday.  If you believe what the critics say, the album sounds like it was written by God and produced by Buddha after a long night of drinking Kool-Aid with Ken Kesey.  We should have a review of it up within the next 24 hours.  I haven’t had a chance to give it a listen myself, but it’s currently streaming over at NPR.
