Music for Perfect People

A few months ago, we introduced you to The Parallax View at a time when Tyler Koykas’ musical project was new to the world. Since signing with the Woozy Tribe, TPV has released a number of EPs, all of which show a constant progression in his creation and assemblage of unique sounds.

The Parallax View comes up with a concept, idea, or feeling for a release by making some art.  When I last spoke with TPV, he felt that “a lot of people use photos as covers, [which are] pretty plain and the music always ends up pretty plain.” To combat this feeling, he began the creative process for his latest EP, Hip Slop, by taking a photo, rubbing a kitchen cleaner on it, and letting it sit for a few days to see what the final product would be.

Musically, the Hip Slop EP features the simple, tight beats of a hip hop album, combined with the dark, creepy, ambient tones of TPV’s keyboards. The end result is a mix of tracks that give  a “full band feel” even though they were created by a single artist.

Also in the works from The Parallax View is an October 13th re-release of the Hip Slop EP, which will come out on a limited run of cassettes, and will most likely include vocals on the original tracks by Bluebird Handwriting, B Side Malone, Vimana Aircraft, Body Cheetah, Rosko Taint, Messed Up Coyote, and Mauve Angeles. Please note that the final choice on the artists to be included on the re-release is still TBD.

The CA synthpop artist Blackbird Blackbird has returned with a new single titled “Calypso,” which has a darker, more ambient sound than his previous works. Take a listen to the single below, and make sure to keep an eye out for new realeases!

After unleashing the bangin’ 4×4=12 on the electro masses, Joel Zimmerman (aka Deadmau5) has released two new tracks which fall in to a more ambient sound. Check out “Bleed” and “HR 8938 Cephei” below and keep an eye for more new releases from the masked wonder!

Last year, Eskmo released his self-titled album on Ninja Tune, which happened to be one of our top listens of 2010 (even though it didn’t make the top 20 list.) The Parallax View has released another sneak peek into his Mashed Brain Soup and this time, we see Anarom making his way on to the track. With the help of some Brooklynite multi-instrumentalists, Justin Stiver and Justin Gonzalez worked under the moniker Pet Ghost Project and created the album Shelf Life, their most ambitious and uncompromising work to date. Shelf Life follows a loose theme of defiant dreams and crushing realities and the sound is full of noise, texture, ambience, and unexpected left turns, all of which remains highly melodic and memorable. One thing that really stands out when listening to Pet Ghost Project is the passion that goes in to creating the music.

Pet Ghost Project retain a rare quality seldom found in the creative world these days. A passion for art that requires significant sacrifice, a gamble to win, a constant struggle against time itself. For the listener though, it is evident that the sacrifice is worth the reward. [via]

Pet Ghost Project’s sound has been compared to Neutral Milk Hotel, Animal Collective, Pavement and Tortoise but the single “Glitch Shake” reminds me mostly of Dinosaur Feathers. Check out the hauntingly beautiful single “Glitch Shake” below. Shelf Life will be out on Paper Garden Records on February 15th!

The Parallax View, aside from being a 1974 thriller, is the musical project of New Jerey’s own Tyler Koykas. What makes this project run is Koykas’ determination to make his music get off the ground and in to your ears. Just by listening through his short (but sweet) catalog on bandcamp, you can see how the project has already begun to evolve! What started with The Flow Of Things (Early and Unfinished Works), an early experimentation of ambient sounds, lo-fi electronics, and different organ tones, has now become a more cohesive force with his Self-Titled Demos 2011 and the sneak peek into Mashed Brain Soup.

Eventhough The Parallax View is new to the scene, he has already signed on to Woozy Tribe, which was founded by Father LongLegs and serves a community of all different artists in the Northeast. Additionally, he is currently re-recording his Self-Titled Demos 2011 to be re-released as The Parallax View EP featuring production from Father LongLegs.

Once released, the self-titled EP will be accompanied by a DVD and the complete remix/mashup compilation Mashed Brain Soup. Appearing on the comp will be Father LongLegs, Eat The Soundtrack, LeadAcidGymnastics, Anarom, Bicycle Killer, Power Pill Fist, Slate, Zackey Force Funk, P.Bateman, and possibly yours truly!

The Brooklyn beat collective known as Astro Nautico is releasing its latest EP, Quiet Nights, on December 9th. Featuring tracks from all three Astro Nautico artists (Kuhn, Obey City, +weed) and guest spots from both sides of the Atlantic (Young Montana?, Termeric, InfinitiRock, Thirsty Jefferson), this compilation is unified by each artist’s interpretation/mix of the Brazilian jazz classic “Corcovado” as performed by Stan Getz.

Phasing tape hiss, crunchy vinyl pops and thunderous subs interface with classic bossa nova piano vamps, raw saxophone swag and the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Astrud Gilberto. This is as much a tribute to the depth of Brazilian songwriting as it is to modern electronic developments in the wake of dubstep and Dilla.

This Shortcast is something different and special. Ten minutes long, it’s as much an original composition as it is a mix. In fact, when we asked the man responsible, Jar Moff, what the difference is between a composition and a mix for him, he said: “for a mixtape thing i felt comfortable using longer cut ups and other artist stuff and intros outros that i m making based on the remixed tracks.”

Jar Moff has a name like a Star Wars character and lives in Athens. He rides the nightbuses, buys records and makes things like this. Coming from the same planet as Dem Hunger and Matthewdavid he brings his own strongly melodic take to the music, which we really appreciate here.
