DOWNLOAD:: Pretty Lights – “I Know The Truth” + “How We Do” [Pretty Lights Remix] + Sneak Peak inside the PL Tour Bus Studio

October 13, 2011

A few weeks back, Pretty Lights released a new single “I Know The Truth,” along with a recap of his 2011 Bonnaroo performance. In regards to the track, Pretty Lights said

“I wanted to try to fuse the emotion of dark 60′s soul music with the energy of raw bass heavy dubstep. All the instruments were recorded to tape and then pressed to vinyl and then sampled for the sole purpose of attaining a warm organic timbre, and all the bass and synth sounds were reprocessed through analog synth modules to get a dirtier and at the same time warm tone.”

Additionally, Pretty Lights has released a remix of his Filling Up The City Skies single “How We Do.” The video is a recap of this year’s Lollapalooza festival, which we sadly were unable to attend.

STREAMING:: The Parallax View – ‘Hip Slop’ EP + “Aging” [ft. Bluebird Handwriting] video

October 7, 2011

A few months ago, we introduced you to The Parallax View at a time when Tyler Koykas’ musical project was new to the world. Since signing with the Woozy Tribe, TPV has released a number of EPs, all of which show a constant progression in his creation and assemblage of unique sounds.

The Parallax View comes up with a concept, idea, or feeling for a release by making some art.  When I last spoke with TPV, he felt that “a lot of people use photos as covers, [which are] pretty plain and the music always ends up pretty plain.” To combat this feeling, he began the creative process for his latest EP, Hip Slop, by taking a photo, rubbing a kitchen cleaner on it, and letting it sit for a few days to see what the final product would be.

Musically, the Hip Slop EP features the simple, tight beats of a hip hop album, combined with the dark, creepy, ambient tones of TPV’s keyboards. The end result is a mix of tracks that give  a “full band feel” even though they were created by a single artist.

Also in the works from The Parallax View is an October 13th re-release of the Hip Slop EP, which will come out on a limited run of cassettes, and will most likely include vocals on the original tracks by Bluebird Handwriting, B Side Malone, Vimana Aircraft, Body Cheetah, Rosko Taint, Messed Up Coyote, and Mauve Angeles. Please note that the final choice on the artists to be included on the re-release is still TBD.

Check out the video for “Aging,” which features the vocals of Bluebird Handwriting.

LISTEN:: Phantogram – “Don’t Move” + “16 Years”

October 6, 2011

Yesterday, the electro-pop/trip-hop duo Phantogram released their latest single “Don’t Move,” along with a live performance at the Moog Sound Lab of another new track, “16 Years.” Both singles will be featured on the band’s forthcoming mini-LP Nightlife, which will be available on 11/1 through Barsuk Records.

Nightlife tracklist::
“16 Years”
 ”Don’t Move” [via]
“Turning Into Stone”
“Make a Fist”
“Nightlife”
“A Dark Tunnel”

Here is some additional info from the Moog Sound Lab regarding the track “16 Years”:

“Vocalist/keyboardist Sarah Barthel sings hauntingly through an MF-104Z Analog Delay while playing not one, but two Moog synthesizers. Her left hand is in charge of the Minimoog Voyager Select Series providing big fat bass lines; the Little Phatty Stage II is arpeggiating in latch mode throughout the entire song. It is also being MIDI synced with the drum machine that percussionist Tim Oakley is performing on. In addition to the drum machine, Tim uses the Minimoog Voyager XL for a percussive sound.

Meanwhile, guitarist/vocalist Josh Carter covers both the full sustain and the mute modes of the Moog Guitar. Going through an MF-104Z Analog Delay and the MF-102 Ring Modulator, Josh creates an ethereal backdrop with the tremolo arm of the Moog Guitar.”
