Music for Perfect People

Aloe Blacc‘s single “I Need A Dollar” has found its way to every corner of the blogosphere, has been used in commercials, and even found a spot as the theme to an HBO series. The single, along with Aloe Blacc’s album Good Times, has received a steady amount of attention from us, but we were always left wondering when a killer remix of the track would surface. Earlier today, Voodoo Farm provided an answer with his remix of “I Need A Dollar,” which keeps the soulfulness of the original, but adds the electro beats that the VF moniker has become known for. Los Angeles California’s The Bronx have had a hell of spring. They’ve opened for Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters, and Dave Matthews (que??), played a NYC booze cruise that separated the boys from the men, and announced the second record from their spicy alter-ego Mariachi El Bronx. In the band’s grand tradition of who-gives-a-fuck-about-album-names album names, it’ll be called MariachI El Bronx II, and will pop out August 2 via ATO.

The first track from El II just premiered on WNYC, and of course we’ve slapped their embed code below. It’s gorgeous. They’re also playing this evening at Brooklyn Bowl, which is free with RSVP. Hit it.

The synth pop outfit Milky Sway & Candy Starlight have released a video for their single ”///BEAT FREAK*,” which happens to put a large focus on the derrieres of some 80′s cheerleaders. The visuals fit well with the the band’s sound, which can be described as “cosmic,” “disco,” and my personal favorite, “make-out party music.”

Earlier this week, we brought the full album stream of YACHT‘s forthcoming Shangri-La to your attention. Now, the pop duo have released a music video for their singles “Utopia,” and “Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire),” which features YACHT jamming “Utopia” while travelling through an odd world that somewhat reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where Homer turns 3D. Suddenly, the world is destroyed, and “Dystopia” kicks in with its wonderfully catchy synth ..

Back in 2009, Portland, Oregon psych-folk band Nurses released their homemade album Apple’s Acre, which featured the crooning vocals of Aaron Chapman, and a large array of instrumentation that made the album blend together quite nicely. As a follow-up to their previous works, Nurses will release their latest effort Dracula on September 20th through Dead Oceans.

With this announcement, we have been treated to our first taste of Dracula with the single “Fever Dreams,” which somewhat reminds me of Maps & Atlases, minus the odd time signatures, and dense sound.

Back in 2008, Kay Kay And His Weathered Underground released a 7” through Suburban Home Records that featured the singles “Diggin’” and “My Friends All Passed Out.” Since then, those two singles have shown up on the band’s forthcoming effort Introducing…, which is currently available to stream here!

As if the full album stream wasn’t great enough, Kay Kay recently revealed information in regards to a 06/26/11 physical release! To celebrate, the band held a record release show at The Triple Door in Seattle, WA on 06/12/11. While we were not present for the show, Kay Kay’s bandcamp page now has a recording of the entire event! In his opening remarks at the show, frontman Kirk Huffman said that this was “a long time coming,” and we completely agree with his sentiments.

If you recall, ZM’s first LP Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare landed a spot on our top album list of 2009, and we hope that Getting Paid makes a showing on 2011′s list as well.

From Stones Throw:

The full details (spoken when I was hella young & my voice was a tad higher) are laid over a Stanley Clarke instrumental, then…the groove me & the great Leon Sylvers III did, kicks in soon after. It was recorded in my bedroom in Pasadena, CA.

The song never made it to Atlantic Starr’s album, but was still a good learning experience, recording w/ 1 of my 1st musical mentors: Leon Sylvers III.

The song briefly appeared on a hand full of cassette tapes I made in 1991 called: “Damon – My Early Works (’88-’90)” which I only gave a few friends to in my neighborhood. I still have the tape with the original homemade artwork done at Kinko’s. Hilarious!

This tune will be ‘mastered’ later, for inclusion on: Adolescent Funk, Vol. 2. Stay tuned & I appreciate U vibin’ with me.
