This year, the project took a turn for the better. More complete ideas and concepts were put to tape. The lineup was expanded to four to created more depth and sound in the live setting. All of it came together in a great new album, and an exciting free remix album.
Jookabox combines rock, blues, soul, hip-hop, psych and more. Everything and the kitchen sink is melded, looped, blended, stirred and baked. Some might claim too much, or too weird, but the result is fun. And fun goes a long way in my book.

“A musician has harnessed the power of two Nintendo Wiimotes to become a cyborg percussionist with the robo-band Jazari. His playing of one drum machine can evoke an automated response from another, so that he can go around the drum circle in a beautiful display of human-robot improvisation.
The man behind the machine, Patrick Flanagan, is a composer who cites music theory, music cognition, and machine learning as the three “chin-stroking disciplines” that influence his work. He created Jazari with a nod to Al-Jazari, a polymath of the Arab world in the 13th century who supposedly created the world’s first robot band.”

Nothing can match the excitement I felt last night when I saw Rich Holtzman’s tweet that a new Portugal. The Man track had been released from American Ghetto. In case you missed yesterday’s post or didn’t notice the nice SPOTLIGHT page we added to the site, you should certainly bookmark it since we we will be updating the page with news regarding Portugal. The Man and their upcoming release Amercian Ghetto.
According to John Gourley:
“The Dead Dog” was the second song that Anthony Saffery, Adam Taylor and I began working on for the American Ghetto project. We started tracking this on my second day back in Boston… it may have been the first, I am not quite sure. This track began with a break beat and a loose set of chords that I had put together in the morning before tracking. Lyrically, this was the first album where I really went out and referenced the streets and places around where I grew up. “The Dead Dog” was a bar out towards Big Lake off Pittman Road where, no offense Pittman ralliers, some pretty shady folks spent their time. I don’t know what it was about that area that drew me in but it did, for whatever reason. As with all the songs on American Ghetto there is a focus on our teenage lives and the things we did and the paths we chose. Some of the moments are sadder than others but “The Dead Dog” was written more about the setting than with a specific person in mind.”

On March 2nd we will make this record available to you, press, radio, retail, etc. Nobody gets the record early; we will not be soliciting reviews, airplay or any support from the industry.
