Last night in Brooklyn, magic happened. It wasn’t David Blane or any of that rabbit-out-of-a-hat nonsense .. Instead, Cast Spells, the side project of Maps & Atlases’ frontman Dave Davison, played a show at Union Hall (a personal favorite.)

A small crowd gathered in the basement venue to enjoy the sweet sounds of Mr. Davison, who was accompanied by a cellist and the drummer from So Many Dynamos. While I have not gotten a chance to listen to the Cast Spells’ EP Bright Works and Baton (still waiting for it to ship .. grrr,) this did not subtract from the experience as the trio rolled through the lovely folky tunes off the album and I sipped on some delicious brews from the bartender.
Check out some videos I took from the show (please excuse the shoddy camera work and the poor sound quality at some point .. there is only so much one can do with a phone):
Overall, Cast Spells was a great time and the music was beautiful (as expected.) Sargenthouse has picked up a gem with Cast Spells and I suggest you purchase Bright Works and Baton at your earliest convenience.
Acoustic Guitar? Check. Vocal Harmonies? Check. Good Old War? You know it.

I was pleased wake up this morning to see that Spin magazine FINALLY gave some good music some respect .. check out their article HERE that speaks of the four best Seattle, WA bands that you probably don’t know about ..
.. well I know about Wild Orchid Children and I can tell you this .. these fellas rock.

Wild Orchid Children unleashed a tribal punk freakout that mashed together Beastie Boys, Deep Purple, and Lee “Scratch” Perry like it was always meant to be. Five dudes on drums (including Kirk Huffman and Kyle O’Quinn of Gatsbys American Dream) + one guitar shredding Doug Henning doppelganger=ridiculous, hilarious music.
SIDE NOTE: Gatsbys American Dream disbanded a while ago .. Kyle O’Quinn and Kirk Huffman are currently involved in Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground! CHECK THEM OUT AS WELL. Here … ill even give you their myspace page.
Don’t forget to check out Wild Orchid Children’s myspace page and if you’re lucky enough to be on the West Coast, WOC will be heading out on a short tour with the RX Bandits later this fall.
