Music for Perfect People

A couple months ago, I got hooked onto this very excellent Portland, Oregon band called the Builders and the Butchers (check here for the first posting about them.) I am currently planning a roadtrip to go see them in Philly .. as of right now, I am going solo. Who wants to join?

Either way, The Builders have a new record coming out on June 30th called Salvation is a Deep, Dark Well. The band’s first album had a very raw sound to its recording .. the newest track “Golden and Green” is Salvation’s opener and shows off the band with a much more polished  sound.

• [OFFICIAL] Coachella 2011 Line-Up

May be Saturday June 6th will be the day that you decide to watch Saving Private Ryan one more time just to remember the invasion of Normandy .. OR may be its the day you go check out The Instant Classic‘s new release titled Newkirk.

For the most part, bands form through friendships and interaction with other musicians (unless of course you are hired .. weird) but that is not the case with The Instant Classic. These fellas are a product of a Craigslist search! JP Fernandez (bass) and Mike Horn (vocals/guitar) had been playing together since 2000 while Steve Nalbert (guitar) and Eric Lense played together all through their college years up in Oneonta, NY. The two groups joined forces through the power of the interweb to create the Newkirk EP (produced by Ben Rice) which is named after the recording studio in Brooklyn, NY.

The Instant Classic have a solid alternative pop rock sound and their most recent efforts have had sounds similar to those of Kings of Leon and Ryan Adams.

I strongly suggest you give these guys a listen .. there is nothing better than a band making music for the purpose of rocking .. these catchy riffs will keep you listening and enjoying. If you like what you hear, there is more good news! The band is working on new material and plans to record a full length record in October 2009.

In case you forgot, Record Store Day was April 18th.  You may be asking yourself why I would be discussing these matters two months later? Well, the kind folks who run Record Store Day have decided that a year is way too long to wait for another day to be dedicated to the purchasing of vinyls .. SO, June 20th marks the first of Vinyl Saturdays. Rumor has it that every third Saturday of the month will be Vinyl Saturday and independent record stores will hold the magic that is new releases by many artists in the form of vinyl.

June 20th’s Vinyl Saturday will release these gems:

WILCO : This is a special 7” single being released 10 days before new album, WILCO
(The Album) comes out on 6/30. This is a limited (3800) run of a 7” that includes these
tracks: “You Never Know” b/w “Unlikely Japan” (an early 2003 version of the track
“Impossible Germany,” previously unreleased.)

GREEN DAY : There is a vinyl version of the CD Single “Know Your Enemy” with a
street date of 6/20. This vinyl is limited to 5000 pieces, and is NUMBERED. The b-side
is an unreleased studio track called “Hearts Collide”.

MODEST MOUSE : There is a series of 7” singles being released (the first of which
streets next week). The second in the series is scheduled for a 6/23 street date. Sony
is allowing us to sell it on 6/20. HOWEVER, because of the street date, there is a
chance that the piece will not arrive in time for 6/20 sales. This second piece is called
Autumn Beds and the B-Side is “Whale Song”.

PETE YORN /SCARLETT JOHANSSEN : These two are releasing an album in Sept
through Rhino and we have an advance 7” with a Duet from both of them and a Pete
Yorn demo on the other side

I hope that these new songs by Portugal. The Man are bringing you as much enjoyment as they are bringing to me. I am unsure of the overall sound of the album thus far but from the two or three tracks I have heard ( “People Say,” “Guns and Dogs,” and now “Do You,”) I know that this album is going to be quite epic.
