El Grupo Nuevo De Omar Rodriguez Lopez
May 6, 2009Omar Rodriguez Lopez’s new side project El Grupo Nuevo De Omar Rodriguez Lopez released the first of their three album run on Cinco de Mayo! The title of the album is Cryptomnesia and it does not prove to disappoint. Fans of Omar’s work with The Mars Volta will be pleased since this album was recorded in 2006 in Amsterdam and is not that different from the sounds the Mars Volta produce .. it is a little more spacey and includes many reoccurring themes throughout the album .. this, however, differs HEAVILY from Omar’s latest solo recordings which prove to be even more “out there” than anything else.

To make this album, Juan Alderete de la Pena from the Mars Volta was recruited on bass and Zach Hill and Johnathan Hischke ofHella on drums and synth bass, respectively. On eight of the eleven tracks, the Mars Volta frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala contributed a mess of lyrics to make the album even more wild.
Just take a look at the track list and see if any of the names pop out to you ..

This album confirms the theory that Omar Rodriguez Lopez is one of the most visionary guitar players around and also that he is clearly ahead of the curve in the music world. While the music might not be for everyone, one cannot the deny the the orchestration and work that went into creating the beast that is Cryptomnesia .
Long live good music.
