Satanic Satanist
April 9, 2009That is the title of the latest album to be released by Portugal. The Man on July 21st .. this brought a lot of excitement to my day.

Here is a little info from the band’s website:
Hello everyone, it has been 2 and a half months since we finished our new album (who’s title matches this blog) and we finally have some solid news to offer. Sorry for the distance lately from the blog but I think Twitter pretty much covers our downtime from touring… You can see all our kitten petting, baby bouncing, candy eating, parties etc. there… First bit of news: We are very happy to have Jason Sechrist back on drums and back with the band. Some of you may have noticed this on our short tour around Noisepop in San Francisco. It is amazing to be playing together in full again. We have to give Garrett Lunceford a huge thank you for filling in for us on tour and on the album while Jason was home. He is a good man and helped all of us out when we needed it.
I guess it has been a long time since I have written a blog and I seem to have forgotten how it all works… I know that I want to say thank you to Paul Kolderie, Adam Taylor, Anthony Saffery (Cornershop), Steve Smith (Dirty Vegas), Zoe English Manville and Ian Kennedy for everything they brought to this recording. They brought along the most relaxed setting we could ask for. Everyone worked together and did just what was needed. There was a lot of laughing and a lot of experimenting and a lot of jamming. Camp Street Studios was exactly what this album needed in so many ways. It took us to a new place in sound and dynamics and structure and song. Just the level of professionalism alone brought our minds into a whole new world. We wrote demos, focused structures, played together live for the basic tracks, jumped head first into the world of synthesizers, and brought back programming/drum machines/loops (for those of you who missed that). The main focus of The Satanic Satanist came down to the structures. With every album we have done there has been a focus to try something new and with this album it landed in the world of Motown/Space and classic song structures.
It was really amazing to see how well Paul, Adam and Anthony worked together. It was very inspiring to be around… Well, the gear that Paul has stock piled may have been a bit of it as well. Camp Street basically has every amp/guitar/bass/keyboard/organ/synth you would want to play on and the space to do it.
