Innerworkings of the Soul

April 29, 2009

Well this article is about to flow right off the cuff .. typing as methinks of things to say.

I am listening to the soundtrack to the movie Dead Presidents and it is really doing a number on my brain.

It is primarily making me re-realize my love for soul music .. with its beautiful lyrics of love and loneliness, the instrumentation with its down right funkiness, and the swankiness of many of the artists featured.  So many of these songs have been covered, sampled, etc .. by so many contemporary artists. People used to put everything into their music .. I dont know how much can be said for the tunes we hear these days but atleast Ive got some soul in my body and my headphones.

Here are some of the tracks featured on the album:

Come on .. Al Green is the man and these lyrics are way too appropriate .. try and tell me different ..

—————————————————————————————-

Aside from the fact that the Isaac Hayes song was sampled by the Wu-Tang for “I Can’t Go To Sleep,” This song was put into the movie at such an emotional point. The trial is going on and the defendant (whose name in the movie is escaping me) is screaming at the judge basically making the point that that soldiers were taken care of when they were in war and then forgotten upon return to their normal lives .. god damn .. shivers.

———————————————————————

I hope you enjoy this music as much as I do.

Until next week .. Peace!

Pop Shit #10: CiCi Blacked Out

April 27, 2009

After months and months of delays, Ciara’s Fantasy Ride is finally out next week and I’m happy to report that, despite the excellent “Echo” being reduced to bonus track status, it’s a really good album.

But today, let’s focus on the closing track, “I Don’t Remember”, not because it’s the best track on the album, but because it’s about a subject near and dear to me, blacking out (Brit had a song about this on her last album too, maybe pop is adjusting to me?). Anyways, the narrator wakes up after spending a night drinking at the club (although maybe more than drinking? “I can’t feel my face”?) and she’s alone and wearing the same clothes and can’t find her phone and doesn’t know how she got home. Shit, I remember that from college.

The one thing I can’t figure out personally is that, to me, the shuffle-y beat and breezy melody makes me think that the song isn’t as sad as the lyrics imply. Of course, on the subject of blacking out (as with everything, but especially this), this is probably a completely subjective thing. In college, my roommates and I would routinely wake up with none of us remembering the night before, so it wasn’t that big of a deal. I know for a lot of people blacking out doesn’t occur often, so maybe I’m just projecting that it isn’t a big deal for Ciara’s narrator, but yeah, it just sounds like a regular Saturday morning to me (minus the not feeling my face bit). I like it, btw.

(PS, there’s also a great song and video about this on the new Art Brut album. Yall got any other songs about blacking out, holler @ comments.)
