Auto-Tune star T-Pain has seen better days. Apparently the crazy hat wearing, robot voice making singer was in an accident involving a golf cart last week. Mr. Pain’s price for the accident? 4 teeth. I’m pretty sure Auto-Tune can take care of whatever adverse effects that might have on his singing though.
Talk about kicking the common man when he’s down. iTunes has announced they’ll be raising the price on songs they deem hits from $.99 to $1.29. This comes in the wake of the worst economy in seventy five years. This seems like an interesting move when pretty much anybody who is paying for digital music at this point is doing so out of the kindness of their heart or because of some moral obligation they feel to do so.
HipHopDX is reporting Andre 3000 was arrested Saturday morning while driving 2007 Porsche Carrera 109 mph in a 65 mph zone outside of Atlanta. The rapper was released after posting a $1200 bail. I considered making a joke here about Andre 3000 being from outer space and how 109 mph isn’t that fast there, but decided against it.
All you hipsters who got your skinny jeans in a knot when it was announced the McCarren Park Pool wouldn’t be hosting concerts moving forward can calm down. Brooklyn Vegan has confirmed that a strip of Williamsburg waterfront between North 8th and 9th Streets will serve as the new home of the concert series hosted by the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn.
Personally, I don’t have the cash to go all out on a music shopping spree like I would oh so love to .. but guys like Del The Funky Homosapien understand this and are doing something about it. Del has decided that in order to give the people what they want/need .. its going to have to be free. On April 7th, Del’s new album Funkman will be available for free download on his website.

“It’s going to be sometime before any sensation captures people’s interest on a whole again like Hip Hop did,” says Del, “I could be wrong, but I’m letting people know they need to mess with me in the meantime. People are jaded that’s all, and I don’t blame them – things come to the head, places switching, it’s a crazy trip!” (HipHopDX.Com)
Check the site for some other free albums as well .. God Bless Del.

The NY TIMES reported this morning that the downtown New York concert venue Webster Hall plans to be recording live shows and selling the sounds on the venue’s website and in Best Buy locations around the city. Artists that decide they would like to partake in this will receive half of the revenue but none of the costs associated with pressing/releasing an album. The artists also have the right to pull out of the deal if the recording is not up to par … stay tuned for some good recordings!
Jenny Lewis has announced a new string of tour dates stretching from April to July. You can see a full list of tour dates over at Daily Noise. Fans of the red headed songstress can also look forward to Welcome to Van Nuys, a documentary film about the making of Lewis’ album Acid Tongue.
The first single off Bob Dylan’s upcoming album Together Through Life will available for free download at bobdylan.com from midnight tonight through midnight tomorrow. Together Through Life is set to be released on April 28th.
The bad economy coupled with the relative ease of both finding and reading about music on the internet has claimed another victim. Alpha Media Group has announced the April issue of Blender Magazine, which features Kelly Clarkson on the cover, will be the magazine’s final issue. Blender.com will remain in business.

Hey fuckers. Next week I promise a return to some criticism or something. Maybe. For now, let’s dance.
Run, you tired, wired masses, from your dark rooms in an imagined Los Angeles to whatever earth-toned paradises you think are out there for you to frolic and make love in. We will be waiting here with loving arms wide open, moving our hips in the places you have not yet realized you will miss. There will be no “I told you so”s, only graceful, reassuring, jittery hugs from those of us too lazy or wise to leave.
Run to your natural greens and tasteful tans but remember when you think of us and our old rhythms, garish as they may be, that, in times of trouble and desperation, walking straight ahead into the neon fog has served you as well as anything.
Run and explore and do your thing across the universe, wide as it may be. Just remember that our machines are spirits too, and you should treat them as such.
Allow me to apologize for my abscence. For the past few Friday’s I have been out of town and the rest of my schedule didn’t really give me an opening to squeeze something in. Damn tournament.
In the meantime though I have been able to listen to the new Decemberists album. It is amazing. A massive, epic work of art.
I started listening to The Decemberists shortly after “The Crane Wife” came out. Going back and reading my reaction to that, I can see I was impressed. And still am. It’s a beautiful intimate album that tells some great stories. But by combining (or maybe mixing two seperate stories together, I was never sure) I felt the overall stories in the album was hurt.
“Hazards of Love” is focused. Here we have one story. A fantasy love story about a shape shifting faun that falls in love with a girl and what he goes through to have her, and then save her from a child killer and evil queen. It is a fantasy. I’ve heard people complain about how unrealistic the story is, but when you have a fucking shapeshifter in your tale realism is thrown to the curb.
Like any good musical, or opera if you want to go there, you have themes. What I’m going to dub the Hazards theme is sprinkled throughout the album. It isn’t always the same, sometimes it’s slow or sped up to match the emotion but it fucking rocks. This really caught me off guard and when I realized it I was won over.
The vocals are amazing. Colin Meloy does great work as the hero (and one of the villians) of the story. My only complaint here, and it is minor, is that he uses the same voice for the hero as he does the murderer. I’m pretty sure its not the same person but I could be wrong. It’s is slightly confusing. The two female vocalists, Becky Stark and Shara Worden, do magnificent work in the two female roles. Worden does spectacuarly stunning stuff as the Queen. There is also a children’s choir that comes off just as haunting as it should.
I mentioned how great the hazards theme was above. The music in general is great. The calm interlude before the storm, the breezy “What a Lovely Night” is a nice easy going tune between two lovers. The guitars turn from peaceful and serene to dark and violent at the drop of a button. Feedback is put into the background of some of the darker songs to add to the danger and discomfort. It is extremely well done.
This isn’t an easy album to get into. It took me a few listens to finally figure it all out and I feel like I can still get more out of it. I’m only just starting to recognize the recurring musical movements and such. I’m a little rusty still on the story as well, but I got the overall arch pinned down. I really can’t recommend this enough. Come December you will certainly being seeing this on many top album lists. Jump on it while its still fresh.
Hear the “Hazards of Love” performed in it’s entirety at SXSW.

Looks like it’s going to be an Afternoon News SmackDown today…I have to catch a train. Check back in a few hours.
Prince performed “Ol’ Skool Company” off his new album MPLSoUND‘s on Jay Leno last night and the video clearly shows that the production was nothing short of spectacular ..
My thoughts:
1. The stage set up is absolutely hilarious … whoever decided that jellyfish and Prince looking like the Prince of Persia in the background was a good idea is a genius. So cheesy yet so effective … i think ill spend the weekend reinventing myself with aquatic animals and capes.
2. I have never heard Prince sound so much like Kat Williams
3. Prince has waited a long time to get on national TV and say “the white house is now black.” I would have preferred the James Brown “Say It Loud .. Im Black and Im Proud” but thats just me ..
4. Nice AIG reference .. I hear Prince hid all his money at the bottom of Lake Minnetonka
Enjoy the video while you can. Im sure Prince himself is scouring the net to take down every free video as we speak ..
Here is a video I saw up on Pidgeons and Planes this morning .. Mos Def spitting some DOOM lyrics and just talkin some smack .. pretty hilarious ..
