Oscar Noms
January 22, 2009
The Academy Award Nominees were announced this morning. Normally I hate any type of award show, but the Oscars do still have some allure to me. So here are the noms…
Actor in a Leading Role:
Brad Pitt-Big Ben Button
Frank Langella-Frost/Nixon

Mickey Rourke’s for the taking. If he wins expect a really drunk acceptance speech
Milk Carton: Leo DiCaprio-Revolutionary Road
Actress in a Leading Role:
Kate Winslet-The Reader
Anne Hathaway-Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie-Changling
Melissa Leo-Frozen River
Meryl Streep-Doubt
Winslet fucked a 15 year old in a holocaust movie. She has to win.
Milk Carton: Winslet-Revolutionary Road
Supporting Actor:
Heath Ledger-The Dark Knight
Phillip Seymour Hoffman-Doubt
Robert Downey Jr.-Tropic Thunder
Michael Shannon-Revolutionary Road

Heavy weight category, but the Joker may have been the greatest thing to happen to the movies this year.
Props: Nominating Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder.

Slumdog is breathtakingly good. Everything about the movie is wonderful. Go see it.
Milk Cartons: The Dark Knight, Wall-E

Hello Gran Torino for Best Picture?
It’s upsetting that it isn’t even in the running because it was an amazing film.
Milk carton . . . Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Ohhh . . . “best” of awards.
Haven’t seen it, but I feel as though it was well received with you, P. What are your thoughts on The Wrestler not being nominated for Best Pic? I have yet to see it, but I hear very respectable things. It seems as though this happens ever year. There are always worthy flims that get left out (recently in 2007 Into the Wild, The Assassination of Jesse James, which I feel may have deserved it over Juno – as much as I enjoyed Juno). This is bound to happen as only so many films can be nominated for Best Pic each year, but would you substitute TDK, Wall*E, Gran Torino, or The Wrestler for any of the nominated movies in particular?
I’ve never even heard of the Reader or Benny B… and I would be willing to guess most of American moviegoers haven’t either. The Dark Knight was a great film worthy of Oscar contention. I thought that it could break out of the stereotypical “it’s another comic book movie”.
I haven’t seen the Wrestler, but it looks great. I’ll see it soon. I’m a fan of Mickey Rourke.
I loved the cinematography and scenery in Into the Wild. The landscapes on the big screen were a good enough reason to see the film, and the story was good as well, although the book, in this case once again, was much better than the movie.
